Just about every insect will clean itself before moving to another flower. This little Sweat Bee is doing some antenna maintenance.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads mounted to the Canon flash mount, 0 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Technique: It was very windy, so windy that the bee couldn't tell that I had grabbed onto the flower's stem with my left index finger and thumb. I then carefully rested the lens on that same hand to keep everything steady.

This is a male Red Mason Bee. I watched a female build nests in the same tree, so I'll see her offspring next year.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 1.5x) + a diffused MT-24EX (-2/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Technique: I had to camp out in front of this tree, early in the morning, for quite some time before the little guy got use to me and the camera. We played a lot of "Bee-Ka-Boo".

Technique: I injected artificial nectar into this flower so this female Drone Hoverfly would have a reason to let me get close.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens with 37mm of extension + a diffused MT-24EX (flash head "A" set as the key and "B" as the fill, both on the Canon flash mount). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. Camera set to use natural light to expose the background. I shaded the subject so the only significant light source for it would be the flash.

I was looking for bees and hoverflies, but I'll shoot anything that lets me get close. I like this shot of a common fly because it shows the mouth parts.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads directly connected to the Canon flash mount). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Technique: I injected artificial nectar into a flower to give the critters a reason to let me get close.

Thanks Linda :) They were hatching out of that tree, and I watched at least one female build nests in it again. So I'll be looking for them again this coming spring.
