Hi guys, so I recently upgraded my gear last week and now i just have a 6D and 24-105L and 70-200 2.8L
I want to get some shallow DOF but think I need to buy a 50mm 1.8 because i wont get that kind of look with f4 on the 24-105. Evne if i set the FL To 50mm I will only get f4 or 2.8 on FF but having the nifty 50 would make more sense for this correct? Especially on those close shots where the 70-200 wouldn't fit...
You'd be surprised how thin depth of field gets when you shoot that 70-200 F2.8 at F2.8 at near it's minimum focus distance at 100mm~200mm. Remember, newborns are small, so you can get the whole child in there, even with telephoto at very close distance. Try it out with a pillow or stuffed animal. You may surprise yourself that you don't need a new lens. This is also nice to avoid getting a super bulbous head and nose by using a wide angle lens at close proximity.
If you really feel you need a new lens, I would definitely consider something in the 35mm range. Maybe even 28mm. While the 24-105 covers that, it does so at F4. Having a 35 F1.4 or 35 F2 makes a lot of sense for portraiture, especially groups, if you care to keep backgrounds soft.
Yongnuo 35mm F2 is only $95 shipped. Fantastic piece of cheap kit if you wanted to try that.
Otherwise, a nice 35 F2 IS can be fantastic (I use this, love it).
