Sport/Fitness Shoot with Raquel and Mathiu - basemodels
Test shoot with Raquel, and her model boyfriend joined for a shot and two as well, he was mainly holding my octa in windy conditions though :)

Mainly shot with Canon70D, 50mm ART and 18-35mm ART.
3 Speedlights in an octa, and one bare as a rim if im not using the sun as a rim.

C&C Welcome

Great shots. What was your setup for these?

I use 3 speedlights in an octa, 2 old olympus and one nissin di700. I use phottix TTL with Highspeed sync when i do shallow dof (2 of these shots).
Most of the shots the speedlights are on half power. 3xHalf power speedlights is enough to fill and fight the sun.

the rim light is a bare speedlight at 1/2 power.

shooting High speed sync requires full power, so i have to pace myself

I took 300 shots without needing to swop out batteries.

He wasn't part of the shoot. His girlfriend just asked if I could take a few shots of one look and take a few nice pics of the two of them for themselves

Well, she definitely wasn't hit by the proverbial ugly stick. Great captures.

I really like all of these, the texture in the concrete is fantastic, and the colours are nice and vibrant. Definitely something to be proud of!

I really think the poses she is doing is not sporty and fitness enough. It looks very glamour poses. And that thing she do with her mouth.... is that in all of the picture. Is that her "go to" look? Models usually have that. Some have good ones... some have weird ones... and some have annoying ones.

I'm starting to take bit of a foray into fitness/lifestyle photography, would you be able to expand on your statement? What about these images is more glamour oriented? I'm genuinely asking because I want to learn and I respect your work/opinion massively.

I actually agree with his comments. In retrospect, if she did actual sports related activities, like stretching, or running, and wasnt "aware" of the lens as much, would be closer to sport/fitness.
Thanks for your input. Im very new to this style of shooting.

Check out ads of nike ,adidas, reebok, asics, and other related ads forsports equipment. They actually use real athletes as models. When shooting a specific category like fitness, fashion, glamour, etc...... important thing is to cast the correct people.... especially the model. The model will set mostly the feel/ambience/flavor/tone of the shoot. This is very important especially when yiu are still developing a portfolio.

Fair enough, though this was her shoot. She wanted to do it this way. I just wanted the experience.
If my brief was to do an ad etc... I would have totally changed the approach. hell i would have arranged to shoot at our awesome sports stadium

If this is a TF/Trade shoot. Both parties should get what they want(do you agree?). You do it the model's way...and you do it your way.... because it's a trade. You want to leave the TF shoot with usable pictures for you and the model's portfolio.

When I use to do trade a few years back, I always have certain look and poses in my head or a bunch of pictures in my phone and show it to the model to do it. A moodboard as you might call it. It makes easier communication with the model.... just a tip. :-)
