Hey everyone. I'm looking to upgrade my current tamron 24-70 2.8 with a newer lens. This lens has become increasingly difficult to use as my photo quality is suffering from a lack of sharpness when used wide open at 2.8 even in the center. I'm looking to find some other options but was looking for some actual user input first. I would consider the Canon 24-70 2.8L mark i lens but am also looking at Sigma however, I've read the same issues are present with that lens as well. Can any of you provide some of your personal input using your lens in concert photography and how it performs? I don't make much $$ from my photography so i'm looking to stay in the $850 range and will consider the Canon mark i lens used. Thanks so much for your input!

Go for the Canon option as the price of that lens is dropping like a lead stone, when first released it was at the £2K+ mark in the UK, now at £1300+. If you haven't got the budget at the moment, chip in a few dollars per week/day and you will so afford it

I am in agreement. I borrowed a canon 24-70 2.8 for a week from a fellow photog and it was awesome! It's got some weight to it but it was spot on! Definately gonna save up for that monster! I've seen them for as low as $800 US.

Does your camera body have micro adjust? You can find the sweet spot in the zoom.

The 24-70Lmk1 has been known to be very copy dependent for sharpness wideopen. My 24-70mk1 was somewhat soft wideopen. I sent the lens to canon for calibration and it improved the sharpness much better than when I originally bought it new.

Oddly people do have preference to the Tammy 24-70 VC version over the Canon mk1 version.

I'd suggest trying to contact Tamron to see if they can recalibrate your current lens. In your budget I'd rather spend little on recalibration and try to micro adjust wideopen and see how if fairs as you go through your FL from 24mm to 70mm.

On the other hand if you can find a low mileage canon 24-70Lmk1 I'd test it thoroughly wideopen and be prepared to ship to canon for recalibration and possibly resending it back to be happy. I do prefer OE Canon lens for potentially more accurate AF. After I calibrated my canon 24-70L it changed my love/hate relationship to more on the "love" side.

If by chance you decide to go well beyond your budget the Canon 24-70L f/2.8 mk2 is incredibly sharp wideopen. It'll be your last 24-70mm zoom you'd buy for the canon world. I seldom use mine but when I do I have 100% confidence for max sharpness and beautiful colours.

I have that Tamron, and sent it in for recalibration. That was three years ago, it still works great.
