I created a Hockey thread like this, but didn't see anything regarding basketball... With that said, HERE YA GO!!! Post up your captures from your kid's pee-wee games to blacktop street ball to professional level NBA captures... Candids, layups, dunks, jumpshots... Put them in this thread... Share insight and ask questions regarding settings and such to help one another in this field of sport... I'll get the ball rolling with a couple of captures from the past and present...

:D

great thread... I finally had a gym this weekend that had decent enough light to shoot at 3200 ISO, I am VERY new at this and my t3I and sigma sometimes struggle with focusing however I tried to work on composition this weekend as much as anything. I know these are a little out of focus and my SS is probably still too low however I was determined to shoot at 3200 lol... These are 3200 , SS 400, 6th grade, sigma 70-200... working on upgrading equipment soon :) hopefully a 5dIII or 7dII are in my future.

Heat ...couple of things. Shutter speed needs to be higher. Mine was shot at 1/800. The other thing and probably the biggest thing is in gyms it is very difficult to get a tack sharp shot unless you strobe it. This was shot with two 600EX flashes mounted on stands along the baseline. I use PW to trigger the flashes at 1/800-1/1000. Let me know if you have any questions and I will be glad to help.

Thank you Firehouse... the problem is once I go beyond 400 or 500 tops in these gyms, the exposure goes way down and I have to crank up ISO or have a very underexposed shot, both of which seem like bad news. I don't have strobes or any ability to do anything like that, I have to make the best of these poorly lit gyms... I am close, this is why I thought a 7dII or even the FF 5dIII would help with the ability to go higher ISO so I can go higher SS and not have as much noise or sacrifice picture quality... I think my t3I struggles and it beyond the limit...

your thoughts?

you are right, entry level is not the best for this stuff. IMHO, if u are into sports, a mint used 1DMK4 could be an option.
i'm shooting around 5000ISO with no issues (of course is better i don't crop too much otherwise you see the noise)

interesting... what about is the range of a used 1dmk4, I'm thinking it's out of my budget :)

Is it not worth upgrading to a 7dII or possibly the 5dIII?

A used 1D4 is going to cost about the same as a used 5D3. I think there's one in the FS section right now for about $1800.

A 7D2 will be more economical...you could probably grab a used one for $1000-1100?

The 2016 LA Clippers Playoff Picture!!!

IMAGE: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1535/26575244625_4863379e11_b.jpg
[IMAGE'S LINK: https://flic.kr/p/Gun5mR] (external link)The LAC Playoff Picture (external link) by Air Butchie (external link), on Flickr

All is quiet before Game 2 at Staples Center between the Clippers and visiting Trailblazers... This is a two image composite; top half with the large player banners and the bottom half of the center court with the new LA Clippers logo... Stadium was relatively dim with only a few spot lights turned on (center court logo and player banners)... Both images shot with my 1DX + 8-15L Fisheye combo... ISO 3200, f/5.6 @ 1/80sec... Composite created and finalized in CS6...

:)

1dmk4 [..] thinking it's out of my budget :)

the fact is for indoor sports you need more light, so u have to increase ISO.
bigger the sensor, better the high iso management, lower the noise.
5D2, 5D3, even the 6D as FF can be used with hig iso values.

1D4 sensor, even if older generation camera, is halfway between crop and fullframe.
7D2 has huge AF yet is still crop, high iso is far from the state of the art..
cheapest option ever finally is getting the 50 1.8 :D
