POTN G-series Speed Challenge #588: Pollution or polluting

If you can't find lots of subjects this week then you must live in a better place than I do - examples are all around us. From cigarette butts to roadside trash to oil sheen on streams - your challenge is to make a good photograph from some of it.

***************
RESULTS!

For a while thought this one was going to bomb with only one entry, so was relieved to see a good selection in the end, appreciating that the subject was probably not one people had in their archives and so had to go out and shoot specially.

A few comments:

OhLook - "Vacant lot in urban residential/commercial neighborhood": Discarded tires are certainly a common eyesore. Maybe you could have shown them in context with houses nearby for contrast?

Sibil- "landfill-bound": Good idea to have low sun backlighting this pile of containers that should be recycled rather than dumped.

Jim Askew - "Union Carbide - Pollute No More": Someone's prized garage collection? Yours?

Maureen Souza - "Alcoholically Polluted". Had to laugh as I had forgotten this interpretation of pollution - good job! Now tell us the story - it does look real, not posed.

Raven - "Tags & Tires": You've got it all: tires, ugly tags, what looks like really grungy ground, vegetation struggling to survive - all making a colorful image.

Winners:

Raven is a very close second but I just had to go with Maureen for #1 this time - her subject's expression so perfectly illustrates the title.

Sibil - your bottles take third place on the podium.

So now it's all yours this week Maureen - good luck!

***************

Congratulations to the winners! This was a fun but tough contest...I drove around all week with my G5X looking for a decent entry. Great challenge teekay!

I finally settled on the Union Carbide sign, a well known polluter, which I found at an antique mall.

Congrats Maureen and Sibil. And thanks for the second place, teekay. I'm in complete agreement with you.
Maureen's polluted entry made me laugh out loud when I saw it. :-)

Great idea for this week's contest. You're right, nothing in my archive that screamed pollution. So it was good to be forced out to find something new this week.

Well crap! LOL!!!! I spent all week looking for something cool & polluted but came up empty handed. When I was going through my Kentucky Derby fundraiser pictures (it raises money for our local Food Bank), I saw this picture I took of one of my daughter's friends. I loved that she couldn't even hold her eyes open for all the wine & daiquiris she'd drunk that day & so I snuck one shot of her. So you are right; it wasn't posed at all & to this minute she doesn't know I took the shot. Skip & I laughed when I got the idea to post it & I prefaced it with "I better not win this week." ;-)a :p

Congrats to Jim & Sibil for their placing & thanks Teekay for the challenge duties. I will have a new challenge up later tonight.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the host! Maureen, your photo is hilarious. I just knew that the glass of wine wasn't that woman's first drink of the day.

Yeah, those first few days scared me, too.

OhLook - "Vacant lot in urban residential/commercial neighborhood": Discarded tires are certainly a common eyesore. Maybe you could have shown them in context with houses nearby for contrast?

I couldn't have. This vacant lot is a roughly triangular piece of ground below a curve in an elevated freeway. There are houses across the street, but nothing within range. I'd have had to get so far away that you couldn't see that the tires had been there long enough for grass and wild mustard to grow through their centers.

Oh Look, you can see the empty daiquiri glass in front of her & I promise you she had several of them before turning to the wine bottle. I also liked the french fries in front of her; they are almost as limp as she was! :-P:-P:-P:-P
