100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 for concert photography?

Typically I'm shooting from the audience first row in medium and small venues with an 60D and 17-50mm during the first set and 70-200mm (non-IS) after the interval. Usually jazz gigs with lighting varying from good to lousy.

For better AF and IS I'm considering buying a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 for an (hopefully soon) 80D camera.

Has anyone done concert photography with that lens? - What is your take on that scenario?

If your getting decent results at f/5.6 now then it should work, but it is a big lens when zoomed out to 400mm. If your at f/2.8 with the 17-50 and 70-200 and still need more light, this lens is going to suck.

Thanks! It is the 70-200 L f4.0, so with the improved ISO performance of the 80D I expect to do better or equal as compared to now.

When I was shooting performances, I never went in with anything longer than 200mm, or slower than f/2.8
I was shooting in dark theatres.

Also keep in mind that the greater the zoom, the more it magnifies any camera motion. 400mm has quite a narrower field of view than 200mm so any shake will have a much greater impact.

The only time I use the 100-400 for concerts is when I'm stuck behind the soundboard at arena shows + festivals. They're usually lit well enough for me to shoot @ f/5.6 with my 5D. All other shows though, I'll leave it at home.

I used to always use the 70-200 2.8 but now I use the 100-400 almost all the time. On full frame it really helps getting good head shots. It might be too long for a non full-frame body. Tends to be more light on the singer's head but obviously there is often the need to push the ISO in smaller, darker venues.


1DX II, 5D III, 16-35 F4 L, 24-105L, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, 100 2.8L IS, 70-200 2.8L IS II, 100-400 II, 500L IS II, 1.4x III.

I've used the similar 70-300mm, but only in daylight. In the pit or close to stage anything greater than 200mm is really too tight, and inside or at night I don't even bother with any lens that won't go down to f/2.8.
