Default EF-S 17-55 IS For Weddings

Sounds like it could be a winner. Good Focal Length (27-88), F/2.8, and IS. Could this be a better lens than the 24-70L??? What do you guys think??? Thanks for all the advice and help, this board is a life saver.

Sounds great except if you use the 5D, 20/30D POWER combo ... then it's only usable on the 20/30D. This is what I'm up against right now ... do I blow a wad (a big wad) on the 17-55 and get a 30D to go along with my 20D ... or do I get a 5D and a 24-70L (it's almost the same damn price).

It's not even close to the same price!!

30D + 17-55 F.28 IS = $3098 CAN (Camera Canada prices)

5D + 24-70 F2.8L = $5550.90 CAN (Camera Canada prices)

So really the 17-55 & 30D is looking good to me.

I'm waiting for the test results, there's already a Sigma 18-50 2.8, there's rumoured to be similar from Tamron and Tokina. I'd like to see a group test, because one of these lenses is a definite buy for me in the next year.

I've already had a look at the Sigma, and even without HSM the focussing was fast and quiet (I'd prefer FTM too), the Canon looks like a great lens on paper, but it'd have to be optically superior to the competition to justify the price difference.

If it would have come out before the 5D I don't know that I would have purchased a 5D..

HAHA I haven't seen any images from it, but I used to get SOOOOOO pissed off that Nikon had a kick but 17-55 and Canon had either a 16-35 of a 24-70.

IMO I can shoot an entire wedding on my 24-70 w FF and that is about the exact same lens on a 1.6 crop. and only using the center of the lens, I don't think they will have a problem getting good optics

Do you think the IS will put this lens in front of the 24-70 in regards to usefullness at a wedding. Especially a nighttime or low light wedding. I shot a wedding in January where my shutter speeds were at about 1/15th at ISO 800. IS would have been nice.

I meant that the 24-75 and 17-55 are about the same price.

If the 17-55 is sharp, I'm in. If it's like the 17-85, I'm out.

The problem with EF-S is just that I see a 1-series body in my future ... so it would be useless at that point. I know lenses aren't 'an investment' but I'd like to be forward-thinking a LITTLE.

The way I look at it is, that when or if I upgrade to a 1 series or 5D, there will be PLENTY of 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D users out there still buying EF-S lens.
If it works great with what I have now, that is all that matters to me.

If you upgrade to a 5D or 1 series, keep a 20D or 30D as a backup. Canon just released the 17-55, the EF-S is here to stay.

Plus, the 2.8 with IS has already been proven to be an awesome commodity. See the 70-200 F/2.8 IS. With these two lenses, your covered from 27-320(crop factor), all with F/2.8 and IS. Sounds like a good wedding combo to me.

has anyone seen any test shots with this lens? How does it perform?
I'm a prime guy, so wouldn't necessarely cosider it, but I'm curious as it would be a great wide angle - normal lens.
