This was advertised by Parks Canada last spring already. And in case you purchased an annual Discovery Pass for this year it will still be valid in 2017. A note to that effect was appended to the one I got in February 2016. This being said, for the satisfactions you get in return when you visit the parks, I do not think having to dish out a few dollars for a new pass next year would have kept me from getting a new one.

Some parks might get overcrowded next summer because of the free passes. I read repeatedly in the past few months that the town of Banff is getting worried about it. They are afraid they might not cope with an exceptional influx of visitors, as they already tend to reach overcapacity now.

Not exactly,... Provincial Park, Algonquin, Arrowhead, and such have never been free. And have a day use fee and camping fee and any other fee they can thing of.

What provincial parks are free?
I have never been to one that did not charge a fee, unless it was some sort of promotional day?
I am speaking of Ontario provincial only, have not been to many other provinces besides the maritimes.

Agree with Jeff, I saw Rangers checking for park passes at nearly each stop we made last Oct and saw them writing tickets twice. Only safe place to stop without a pass would be at the East or West entrances or Visitor Center to buy a pass :-) The pass fee was very reasonable we thought.
