Question What women wear...

How the hell do you shoot at weddings without things dropping or what not. I normally have my hubby to help, but if i know my batteries are almost low or my card is nearlly finished and i want to finish shooting hwat i am doing....i hold this stuff in my hand, or if im wearing a belt i tuck it in there.

I cant exactly wear a shooters vest....id look retarded all dressed up with this bulky thing that is made for MEN lol!

WHat do you women wedding shooters out there wear to weddings....i wore a dress to all the oens i have shot, its uncomfortable and i hate it but i have nothing else, except for a pant suit, but in the summer....to put it lightly i almost die in it!!!

What the heck do you do I have nice flat shoes, i want to wear pants, id prefer to wear jeans lol i have nice tops but then i dotn want to be under dressed...its such a small problem i dont even know why im thinking about it - but it BUGS me lol

Maybe a small bum bag to hold things?

Get yourself some thin fabric cargo pants, you know, with all those pockets, and wear them under your dress.

When no one's looking hike up the hem and get or store what you need.

Okay.. I'm in a bit of smartass mode tonite.

Hey, you wanna hear underdressed? I can understand being a professional and needing to be comfortable in order to do a "grade A" job. However...last August, my brother hired a shooter for his wedding. Real "pro". Guy was over $4,000 total. You wouldn't believe it. I won't mention how horrible his shots were. Framed right, great subject placement, good idea, but spent NO time on composition or exposure.

ANYWAY.

This guy shows up to my brother's wedding (an extremely formal event, by the way ), and he's wearing some cheap old khaki pants, a black t-shirt, and some bright new sneakers! Had his second shooter wear the same exact thing!

I was very unimpressed and it gave me a bad image of him...even more so when I saw his bad images! AHA! I kill myself.

Then again, the guy told me he just spent $5,200 on his "new body". When I read the word "N***n", I had to feel a little bad for the guy.

In my humble opinion, if you're shooting professionally, it'd be great to wear appropriate attire for the event, esp you're a lady, you should hire yourself an assistant.. someone who'd handle such problems.. it's easier for us here where i'm from i suppose because labor is not that expensive... i don't know how much it would cost you there in australia but i think an assistant would do the trick

Id rather BE the assitant, im doing small weddings on the side for experience, so i dont want to hire an assistant...i dont feel comfortable doing that - i dont feel "right" if you know what i mean?

LOL cargo pants under a dress? I wear mid length dresses so i dont think that'll work hahaha!

And as for the dood who charged 4 grand for a weddign and then came in his cheap tracky dacks and ****ty shirt...hello id be angry if he were my photographer lol my wedding photographer wore nice black pants a white shirt and tie! Dress to the event ya know?

But for me...i dotn want to wear a dress, and i want to be comfy and i dont want to get hot in what im wearing! I dont want wedding photography for me to get too big, im not confident enough, i want to shoot for someone else and be their asst. Otherwise i would wear nice black pants, and get niec collared shirts with my company name and my name on them...but i dont want too coz i dotn want to get into the industry too big right now while im plannng on moving and being an assistant!

Anyway...more suggestions? lol

I guess another idea that I just had wouldn't go over too well either.

A garter belt with pouches?

Okay, I'll go sit in the corner.

Truth be told, during my recent first, I wore black slacks, a black shirt with tie, and my (black) shooters vest.
Had it not been for my shiny chrome dome, I'd have disappeared!

I don't wear dresses or skirts to weddings. I dress in pants and a nice blouse, sometimes I also have a "dressy" vest on top of the blouse, to have some spare pockets for memory cards, etc. I have batteries and memory cards in my pockets of my pants (I can't live without pockets!). I also have some blouses with pockets as well, but they don't look cool if they are carrying something heavy, so they are more good for memory cards. I have a system with my memory cards though, since I shoot with two bodies. empty cards in my back pocket and full ones in the front pocket, keeping always the left side for one camera and the right side for the other. I'm ok with someone lifting a card from my back pocket, but it should be hard to lift a full card from my front pocket.

OK my take on it and trust me I have no idea, I am male. LOL If you are shooting a wedding then, Del, you have it right. I must dress to fit the event. If you feel comfortable in a dress then great. But since we get the feeling that you don't then try to consider pants. It doesn't have to be a suit but you have to be able to blend into the crowd. Have you ever heard of a fanny pak? It is like a belt with a large pouch attached to it. you can have the pouch at the back side or front. One way to carry stuff in a dress. There are also cargo style capri pants that still show some leg (lower calf that is..) and you can wear nice comfortable shoes. I would suggest flat. You should have at least a 1 inch heal for foot comfort. (I used to sell shoes...ladies shoes...just call me Al bundy...LOL) The reason for the pants is so that if you have to lie on the ground for a shot or two, you are not showing the rest of the crowd your privates. Here are some examples I found.....

IMO, you're the shooter, not a guest. Wear what you need to wear to get the job done as long as you don't show up skanky.

A garter belt...hmmm...yes go sit in your corner RIGHT NOW! hahahaha!!

Petra...pockets in pants, i didn't even think of that being so pathetically blonde today and having rapid retarded moments all of today...all my dress pants are work pants, but eh who cares they do the job lol

WELL BLINN! You came out of the closet, you are really a fashion designer aren't you? Those pants are bloody byoodiful! lol Im loving them...they are so ME! They just started coming out too, i might have to nip down to trusty old target and pick some up good idea THANKS!

Oh and about the shoes, im more comfortable in 6 inches (Im short so i have always learnt how to walk in big heels lol) but then again u cant predict the future and id rather not break my neck haha (I do take a spare set of thongs to these events, we had this discussion before i mean foot wear not under wear lol)

cd-ink LMFAO! SKANKY PHOTOGRAPHER!!!! Well i best not do this...but i have a feeling i already have *blush* the last wedding i did...on the boat...it was such a hot day, i had my pant suit to wear, gorgeous pinstripe mind you i love that outfit! It was just too hot, it was 40 degrees celcius on the water...so i changed quickly into a dress i picked up that day...BAD MOVE! It was flowing and kinda boho...so i wrapped a belt around my waist (It looked cool so i thought!)

Turns out i looked skanky...i got home and looked in the mirror (I had no mirrors but my car windows to look in) to my horror the dress was see-through...and with the sun the way it was i can understand now why people were watching me photograph the couple.

My hubby burst out laughing and i felt like such a dork..but i laughed it off...because too many times i have found myself getting embareseed and i think im used to it hahaha!

Anyway....just a funny story to end the night...thanks for all the advice which i could have though tup myself but i find that i am being very lazy and asking all sorts on here instead of thinking for myself........is anyone else liek that? LOL

I wear dress pants & cute flip flops, some kind of nice dress shirt. I believe if they are paying me 1200.00 i need to dress nice. I would never wear jeans although i would love to. Just think it looks unprofessional. Pants are much easier since i am always squatting and dont want everything to hang out and show. I did a wedding in 95 degrees with black pants, sleeveless lacy shirt and actually was o.k. hot yes but for the money it was good. as for batteries. they last quite awhile. i keep my backpack kinda close and have my husband run if i need anything. I also pay a college girl a bit and she will run for me. Its not that big of deal. i mostly stick with one lense and my cards are big so its not that much of a problem needing pockets. get a different battery when you are changing different group shots?

Yeah, never jeans, but I do wear pants that have pockets, that's one of my things I look for in pants. MUSTHAVE pockets! Actually my pants are semi stretchable, so I can squat even in tighter pants without having an accident *rip!*
