On Canon's UK based wedsite DSLR's are split into 3 sections.

Beginners, Enthusiasts, Professionals.

In the Enthusiasts section we now have 77D, 80D, 7D2 and 6D.

So a wide choice there from high end rebel to dumbed down full frame model.

And then the two in the middle, the cheaper camera has the higher spec sensor but the more expensive has the build, better AF and faster burst rate.

Very confusing even for those who follow the model line up.

Lee

'beginners' have only small body APS-C (and no FF)
'enthusiast' now has small body and medium body cameras in APS-C, and full body in FF formats
And 'pro' has full body and professional body in only the FF format (since pros would not bother with APS-C)

Analyzed in that manner (ignoring the model name game) it makes some degree of sense!

So lets suggest to Canon a new model line up.

B1, B2, B3 etc.

E1, E2, E3 etc.

Hey, Canon is reaching a breaking point in its model number evolution, what happens after the 900D and the 90D?! or after the 1DX (roman numeral 10)?

With your proposal, after B9 comes B10 thru 99, after E9 comes E10 thru 99, etc. as evolutions along the same themes. And if Canon needs more stratification than three levels, it has C and F. :p
B vs C or [E vs. F] or [P vs. Q] might emphasize 2k 'consumer video' vs. 4k 'professional video' (so there is no 'beginner with professional video' C-series. Later as customer expectations continue to change, E/F becomes 4k [consumer video] vs. 8k [professional video], with the consumer video in the lower-letter series. It is nonsensical to offer a 'pro' line with anything except 'pro video', so one doesn't need a later above 'P'.

By George I think we've go it!

Upon a bit more thought, 'B' (Beginner) is better 'C' for Consumer...no 'beginner' wants that label forever

And rather than a single letter, a second letter allows stratification for size of body

  • C for compact
  • S for standard
  • E for extended size

The entire line up (equivalent to today's products) could be

CC (consumer features in a compact body...equivalent to T5, T6)
CS (consumer features in a standard body...equivalent to 6D, 70D, 80D)
EC (enthusiast features in a compact body...equivalent to recent 77D)
ES (enthusiast features in a standard size body...equivalent to 7DII, or what was in the 20D/30D/40D/50D)
EE (enthusiast features in a extended size body...no representative models at present)
PE (pro features in extended-size body...equiv. to 1Dx)

And by using two-digit launch year, you immediately have a mental image of the technology evolution over time

CC16 vs. CC17 for last year's model vs this year's model of consumer features and size body
CS19 for the successor to 80D launched in 2019
PE19 for the successor to the 1Dx launched in 2019
