I've had this Ab800 for about 2-3 years. On average I use it about once every 3-4 months. It definitely has not been used heavily. It was stored in a closet and has only been used outside twice last summer. I'll probably just sell it and go back to speedlights as they are more convenient for what I do anyway.

Alienbees have a 2-year warranty so you might still be under warranty or close to it. I would call Paul C. Buff, Inc. and ask them about their turnaround. They can look up the age of your B800 by the serial number. I haven't heard complaints about their customer service since Paul died. The only complaints I've seen were about the availability of the PLM umbrellas and the versions they stopped carrying.

I've blown capacitors on White Lightnings several times. One Buff tech told me the caps need to be energized more frequently than I was using them (the WLs are my most powerful and heaviest lights, didn't need the power all the time so they stayed at home).

Behavior is exactly what you mentioned: pop-smoke-no work.

I called them today and the lady in the service department said it would be $47 plus shipping to replace the board with the blown capacitor. I don't see myself using it any more than I did which is rarely so I'll probably sell it to my buddy.

Thanks for the reminder that I needed to run my five units again. I don't use them often but try to remember to cycle them for a day once every few months and to charge my remote receivers.

Turn time has been about as quick as you can expect. Ship time, on the bench inside of 24 hrs, get a call as soon as they diagnose, authorize repair, back in the mail inside of 24 hrs.

Can't complain about the service, but the mood has shifted to more...mercenary maybe, since PCB died.
