I'm a wedding photographer with some experience in studio and recently breaking into commercial/fashion work. I wanted to start a discussion about breaking into commercial work, how most people structure their pricing (by the hour/ by complexity of assignment/ by number of pictures delivered), legalities when delivering your work (do you give limited rights usually? Can you give examples?). Want to hear any ideas or experiences you guys/gals have had.

OK, I do believe you still have to bid for the assignment. Your bid would cover most of the incidents that you do see in a wedding from scouting the locations (even if you don't use a location scout) it is itemized.Travel costs, rentals and purchase of consumables to all the way to PP and color grading for their printers. With a new client, I talk to whomever prints for the magazine and find out how to minimize color errors since some printers print differently.

Legalities would be something like exclusive rights for a certain period. They would want their ad to run for a season or a bit longer, and it may be region specific. Asian/AU markets would be different from the market in the Middle East. And you could negotiate for a separate internet rights since some have a separate internet presence.
