One great thing about the Canon 77D is the ability to handle a wide dynamic range. There are very bright areas and dark areas in this photo that were dealt with satisfactorily.

Big positives about the EOS 77D: very fast auto focus, handles dynamic range better that all EOS cameras built before 2016, image quality.

Photo: early morning on Hollywood Beach Florida.

I think I'll be buying one around Christmas. They should be on Canon's refurb site by then. The only negative I see is the tiny viewfinder. The 80D is basically the same size as our 6D so there'd be very little point to purchasing another body the same size as my goal is smaller form factor. I played with it at Best buy and I got it set up to how I would shoot(AF/BBF/etc) Even with the smaller body, the button placements work better for me than the M5/Sonys. The grip is deep enough it feels secure. Guess I just prefer dslr ergonomics. I think it's time to let our 40D go out to pasture. I've been using our old Tamron 17-50 (non-vc) on my 7d2 lately and it's surprisingly holding up well. I think the 77D and Tamron 17-50f2.8 is going to be my travel/bday/zoo setup. Small and very light but WAY more user friendly than my eos M.

I used the 7D before and did not notice a big difference with the viewfinder on the 77D. I like the button placement a lot, the touch screen and the fast autofocus when shooting birds and planes.

### FOR TAMRON USERS ###

Tamron has posted an "FYI" for those who use Tamron lens with the new EOS77D:

We would like to ask you to do the following when using a Tamron lens with below Canon models.
Prior to use, please turn OFF the “Lens aberration correction” function stated in the camera’s menu.

I recently purchased the 77D and now its likely the SL2 will be similar in spec to the 77D I read.
Seems odd?

Similar sensor specs but yet very different cameras. I just purchased the 77D for my daughter who had a T5i, but had also been shooting my my 5D3. She wanted something with more controls (the 2nd dial is very useful in her macro photography), but did not like the extra bulk of the 5d3 or even an 80d. Essentially, they took what she wanted from the 80d and put it in a package that was lighter, smaller and fit her hands perfectly. She is not into video so the lack of 4k was meaningless. Now, if only Canon would make the Camera Connect App for Windows phones, my daughter would be all set. Now, as for the SL2, that is the one my wife wants as she wants something small, light and nearly automatic when she takes pics at parties or of our son. She already has the SL1, but the wifi with camera connect and flip screen are really the two items she wanted. So two cameras with two completely different "users" in mind.
