Hehe time to bust out the old a6000 shots. Where was this at?

Haha yeah. I haven't really posted many of my a6000 images. This was at the Texas Renaissance festival north of Houston from a few years back.

Got the a9 today (the rental one...the one I bought gets here Monday).

It's definitely a faster, more responsive camera. I don't have the giddy new toy feeling from it though. I played with if for about an hour just now. Outside of 20fps its pretty much an incremental improvement over the a7rII. Don't get me wrong it improves in all the areas it needs to and the culmination of the incremental improvements make it a nice upgrade from the a7rII (not in resolution of course), but this is definitely more of a tool to get a job done than a toy....I got it because better AF, faster operation, and dual slots are a big deal for weddings and events, but those are definitely more of a "need" than a "want".

I'm home alone with the a9 though...my feelings will probably change when the kids get home and I really put it through its paces. When I had the a6500, the a7rII felt so sluggish next to it when photographing my kids and I found myself enjoying the a6500 more than the a7rII.

I also got the rx1rII back today and am feeling apprehensive to sell it because its such a cool little camera. I feel like I'm selling my sports car to buy a mini-van lol. I snagged an rx1 MKI for a really good price on ebay today though. Hopefully it will serve just as well for documenting the family....the rx1rII was overkill for that anyway, but I did like having eye focus on tap.

Overall, I still feel I made the right choice. The a9 is the perfect compliment to the a7rII....I needed a second body and while there are cheaper options (like a second a7rII), there's a synergy between having these two cameras on tap because they cover each others weaknesses. In many ways that's better than a single "jack of all trades" camera, because of course, those types of cameras are "master of none".

Last piece of the puzzle for me is scoring an FE 35 1.4. I need something to replace the 24-70GM and RX1rII as my normal focal length solutions.

.

Congrats pre. The only way i can afford that beast is to sell my rii and the 24-70gm. I don't mind losing the RII but the 2470GM is hard to acquire again. I can do an entire wedding on that lens.

Are you going to do the overheating test?

Yeah the a9 is funded by the FE55, LAE-EA4, SAL 135 f1.8, and Rx1rII. Lots of gear to fund this thing.

I actually sold the 24-70GM in April....I'm using the funds from that to get the Rx1 MK1 and the FE 35 1.4.

With a second body with the 70-200 or 85 attached, I find that a 35mm prime is all I need for the wider shots during a wedding. I have the loxia 21 if I get into a bind and need something wider. The only reason you need to go wide is group shots in tight spaces, so MF is fine.

Hehe its so hot right now that an hour outside will be its own overheating test.

Same here David. Maybe it's because Verizon is taking control of Yahoo. -?

With the latest firmware, you can't move the AF points now with the shutter and aperture wheels. Have you notice or i'm missing something?

As far as I know, only when the older selection style is made using focus settings. I would love to try the wheel for movement since they're so fast.

I hope there's a 35-120mm lens so i don't accidentally shoot group shots at 24mm.

Yeah this is why I actually don't like 24-70 zooms for events. It's hard to break the habit of zooming out instead of stepping backwards when you're in the middle of something like a wedding....and the distortion can do some unflattering things on the wide end.

With firmware 4.0, it's better than ever.

Hey Charlie, I did the update but don't really feel anything special.. Am I missing something? I can't seem to find what's improved with focus settings..

I use "Focus Standard" rather than "Focus Settings"

The floating AF

I also use Focus Standard on my center button. with the old firmware though. after pressing the centerbutton, you can move the AF point using the shutterspeed and aperture wheel. now it won't. you'll end up using only the up/down/left/right buttons.

The Sony-Zeiss 24 f2 SSM focuses very slow on the A7r via LA-EA3, but it is usually worth the wait.
