Just a few of my wife again. She has been very patient with me and my practice. My kids are another story but anyway, I'm grateful I have someone to practice with.
I feel like I'm stuck and just not seeing the progress I would like to see. I know most of you here have been doing it for years. Me, just over a year but I drag my used 5d out everyday and practice if it's 30 min to a few hours.
Any advice is welcome and wanted on how or what I could have done to make these better.

In the outdoor shots I used one godox xplor with a shoot through umbrella and tried to stay within the sync speed of the camera as I was frustrated with the images I was getting using HSS or shooting wide open.

A few from inside. I have a small studio set up but looking at the metadata from those images my shutter was at 200 and I should have set it to 1/250, right? Images were lit with a speedlight and a 600 watt strobe.

Even though her expression is very similar in most of the shots, I still like all of them.

I was going to say the same thing... As a photographer you have to get them to do something different.

It depends on what the objective is. A constant expression removes a variable if that isn't what is being practised.

Thanks for the replies. On most of these I have just been practicing blending my flash with ambient. I'm confident with it now.. just take my meter reading and then meter my flash till it matches. Posing is something I just know nothing about and it looks like the shirt has caused a color casting on her face and I'm sure it could be fixed in PS but that's the other area I know nothing about.
I'm going to pull the trigger on phlearn and try to learn PS there.

Okay. Sometimes free advice is worth even more than you paid, but not always.

  • You aren't posting bad work and thinking it wonderful. That in itself puts you high above average.
  • You are working at it. Again, a high step beyond average.
  • Practice helps you do what you are doing more consistently. Put negatively, the goal of practice is to get stuck in a good place. You may already be close.
  • Experimentation is the traditional way to get unstuck. Look at your images and think hard about how you might make them different and perhaps even better. Every shot has dozens to variables under our control.
  • Be prepared for most of your experiments to succeed in the sense of producing results you don't like. Keep careful track both of what you are doing and your expectations. When you get a WOW result you want to be SURE you know how what happened,
  • Pay your model. Flowers. Attention. Praise, Housework. Use your imagination, but pay her well.

If any of that helps, please respond with fixes for my lately rotten golf game.

Instead of clutter I will just post them here. I talked the wife into another photo op if I did the dishes and we were off! I watched a Gavin Joey (?) Video and got the idea to try this.. I can't see the back of my camera so I have to plug it into my laptop to see my images. But... It still works!
