Zoom lenses have gotten pretty good - very good (based on price). Or, I have really become very lazy and let the zoom frame/compose instead of moving my feet.

If you were traveling (city and country side) and could only take one prime lens, what would it be? Would you go with something like the Canon 24mm f/1.4, or the other end, the Canon 135 f/2 or something in between - the one of the "normal" 50mm f/1.2, etc., or 85mm f/1.2 II? (I know, there are all Canon "L", but its just a starting point for the discussion.)

I know, it depends on what you shoot, but for that criteria of only one lens and doing both city and country, any thoughts?

Or, as in the header, what is your most used Prime?

Really appreciate the input!

Thanks.

Most used:
These days it's the 135mm f/2L
Followed closely by one of the little "pancakes" usually 40mm f/2.8

A few years ago when I was still an avid wildlife shooter, so for about 10 years it was the EF 500mm f/4L IS.

And this summer,. it is going to be the version II of that lens,.. when I get back to Africa :)

Favorite: is that 500mm.

I have the 24, 50 and 135 and I love all 3 but for travel I would choose the 24L.

On my full frame I like to use the 24Lmk2 and I enjoy using the 35 f/2IS on my crop sensor.

I don't think many are aware of how incredible the 35 f/2IS is as far as IQ is concerned. The native Canon lens is accurate and fast and I seldom hear people ever needing to send to canon for recalibration. I know this would be common practice for Sigma prime users buying docking stations.

For a general prime, 35 f/2 IS. For macro, 100L

Pretty much covers it.

tough pick, like the 35 for practicality and 50 for better looking photos....

When there's space, I generally take the 50, otherwise 35 is safer.

A wide angle prime is last on my list on what possible prime to get. Current *potential* next lens would be 85mm. I find the 16-35mm f4 to be a good form factor, and since it's wide angle, there's less need for it being fast. The most used lenses in my shoulder bag are the 16-35,24-70, and 100mm macro. So 100mm 2.8L is my answer.

Over the past 6 months the 400 DO II is/was my most used lens, prime or zoom, simply because I was doing all birds, all the time. Aside from that, either the 50L or 100L, both of which are my all time favorite lenses.

For travel, I would choose my 35 f2IS. It's my main lens used anyway (on a full frame 6D). The other lens I carry and use most is my 100 L macro (used mostly for closer portraits), so I'd try to squeeze that along too if I got to bring a second lens.

I used to have a 17-55 glued to my crop camera, but I couldn't afford an equivalent focal length zoom when I upgraded to full frame. I got the 35 IS based on the great recommendations I read about it, but I was still surprised how much I've come to love it! Just got my 70-200 out today for (I believe) the first time in a year and a half. I've been using the 35 and 100 exclusively over all my zooms because they're great quality, fairly lightweight, and the perfect combo of focal lengths for my everyday use.

Wow, when I saw all the 35mm IS, I was wondering why am I not seeing the "L" version 35mm? It's faster, more expensive. Is the non-L IS better?

I would say the 35IS as well. But when I nearly bought it I got the 28mm instead. Mainly for frame nostalgia. Oh yes, the 28IS is my most used lens. It is on par with my 135mm for IQ.
