My web host includes support for Cloudflare free package in their control panel.

Firstly I assume this is a good thing to have?

Secondly, when activated it pops up a message to the effect that "your site must be accessible via www" and offers to make this so if you choose to activate. My site was set up to be accessible without the www (https://danmarchant.com (external link) and http://danmarchant.com (external link)) with www.danmarchant.com (external link) redirected. I assume that the redirect = accessible for their purposes...

But my real question is, if someone visits the non-www version will that content still be coming from Cloudflare or should I actually disable the non-www/redirect to the www version?

Cloudflare is most likely ok for those who need a simple DDos protection solution. What I do not personally like in it is that all traffic is routed via their CDN.

Secondly, when activated it pops up a message to the effect that "your site must be accessible via www" and offers to make this so if you choose to activate.

You should ask those from Cloudflare support, they have quite extensive help pages. Www could mean in that context only the protocol.

But my real question is, if someone visits the non-www version will that content still be coming from Cloudflare or should I actually disable the non-www/redirect to the www version?

I would redirect www to non-www (we do in POTN). If your site uses logins/sessions/cookies, allowing the two would require two logins for example.

Test all combinations of redirects: now a redirect from
http://www.danmarchant.com (external link) redirects to https://www.danmarchant.com (external link) which gives cipher error in Chrome:
This site can’t provide a secure connection
www.danmarchant.com (external link) uses an unsupported protocol.

I thought that was the main point of a CDN. It serves the content from its global servers faster than if it came from your shared server in one geographic location.

Test all combinations of redirects: now a redirect from
http://www.danmarchant.com (external link) redirects to https://www.danmarchant.com (external link) which gives cipher error in Chrome:

Thanks for that think I managed to fix it (after completely breaking the whole site). :)
