I can't find any AF lenses that don't have bad LoCA, like this...

EDIT: I know it's not the AF mechanism that causes this!

Chromatic aberration is a product of the glass, and the rules of physics. It has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not an electric motor moves the focus mechanism.

Absolutely, which is why I pointed out I can't find any AF that don't do this. Not because they're AF, just because they aren't offered.

I feel your pain.

Good apo lenses need superior glass, and superior glass is expensive, so much that Canikon and Sigma wouldn't get that awesome juicy markup per lens (note that we are talking about a few dozens bucks more).
Since most customers don't care about CA (as they don't even know what it is), Canikon and Sigma optimize for planar test charts, which are almost unaffected by CA. Most Internet test sites are part of this problem, as they are run by nerds using test charts and software to assess lens performance.

You are one of the few who know better, and got a couple expensive Zeiss APO lenses.
However, Zeiss is not immune either, as the awesome 100/2 MP has the same Achilles' heel (although an awesome lens in every other respect).
Leica's marketing is also guilty of cheating customers with some fishy "APO" releases that are quite disappointing as far as LoCA correction. The Summicron-M 90/2 APO is a nice example.

Which lens did you use for that shot ? Sigma 50/1.4 ?
Apparently, the only Sigma Art lens with good LoCA correction and AF is the 135/2. However I have never tried it so take this with a big grain of salt.

As for wider FL, we just need to boycott (and wait untill other customers know better ;-)a).

I didn't know the 100/2 had trouble with LoCA... That was one of my wishlist lenses. Know any good macros that don't?

I used sigma 85 EX DG HSM for this.

I wasn't aware sigma had a 135 art, much less that it was low LoCA.. Nice!! Might need to replace my zeiss 135 ;)

Sure. Get a Leica-R 100/2.8 APO Macro. One stop slower, but much better CA correction.

Be sure you compare the lenses thoroughly and at all focusing distances before you switch.

Nothing for a canon body?

Out of interest, what lens was that shot taken with? It's not showing up in my browser. How much cropped?

Thank you ... and for the greeting. :-)

I am probably being stupid ... but I still can't figure out what lens was used. I am guessing there is a 50% chance that I own a copy ... would just like to be sure. It would be nice to find out I didn't.

Thanks ... I'd missed that information.

Hey, well I dodged that particular bullet ... no doubt just to step into the way of another one.

A Leica-R to Canon-EF adapter ;)

The APO Lanthar 125/2.5 Macro was available in native EF mount, but still as a manual lens. I have never shot with one, but some people say it rivals the Leica-R 100/2.8.
Both lenses still fetch high prices on the used market, and this means that Canikon alternatives are not as good.

Incidentally, Voigtlaender has recently announced an APO Lanthar 65/2 Macro, but only for Sony E-Mount. We'll see if it lives up to its big brother's reputation.

Note that Canon recently announced three new TS-E Macro L lenses, and their price is high enough to justify exotic glass, hopefully with apo performance. We'll see... but I wouldn't buy any used Macro lens until these are released, as it is quite possible that used prices for Leica and Voigtlaender macros will go down.

125/2.5... You're right, I don't notice LoCA -- but it also seems to lack contrast?

Never tried the lens, but I wouldn't be worried.
