Putting a 50mm on a 7D2

we shoot weddings and the 7D2 and the 17-55 takes a ton of shots

we frequently put the 50L on the 7D2 to shoot at F/2.0 and below. Results are great and Bokeh is great...Not as good as full frame but still really good. I also slap on a 17-55 for short zoom work.

We love having a crop in the bag. Works very well and compliments our 1Dx2 and 5D3.

The 50 will work great. Give it a try

I started photography with a manual film SLR: back when the kit lens was a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4. A "portrait" lens was 100-135mm. Since the OP has both a FF and crop, I'd say a 50mm can fill several roles. On FF, it's considered "normal" perspective (equivalent to the human eye). On a crop, it's getting closer to "portrait". As Skip mentions, it is more about shooting distance: but they have been considered those categories for average shooting distance and framing. I also find it interesting that there's not a consistent agreement about what term to use for perspective/FL....whet​her "compression" might be it. Some argue we shouldn't use that because they say it's not a function of the lens...but actually, FL is part of it. Within the movie industry, this is a known phenomenon and is called the dolly zoom. I've used this gif before...but here's a popular example:

Let's recap the terminology:

You are using perspective distortion to achieve the dolly zoom effect, by going from compression distortion (telephoto) to extension distortion (wide angle) while keeping the subject framing identical (in your example from the movie Jaws, the framing is fixed on the girl).
The only way to keep the framing identical while reducing the FL is moving nearer to the subject, hence the term dolly zoom for the final effect. The dolly is a cart to move the camera.
Obviously, you can also dolly zoom from wide to tele (e.g. Hitchcock's Marnie, 1964).

Yes, so as the name implies: you're using two things. A dolly to change distance (and perspective). As well as a zoom (or change of FL) to keeep similar framing in the whole image area.
