Attending First Air Show - Seeking Advices

At this moment, I am thinking:

Option 1: 7D2 with 150-600mm, and 1Dx with 24-105mm. That should give me a good range.

Option 2: 1Dx with 100-400mm, and 7D2 with 24-105mm. I love pairing the 1Dx with the 100-400mm for overall performance. However, I'd lose range.

Option 3: 7D2 with 150-600mm, and 1Dx with 70-200mm (would 70 be wide enough to cover formation flight?). But then I would need a 3rd lens to cover the range shorter than 70. The 10-22mm would beg to come along in that case. This would be the heaviest option, too :-(

Hmm ... maybe I am overthinking the whole thing! :-)

At least the weather is predicting sunny sky for Saturday.

I'd be inclined to go with the big lens on the 7D2 and the short lens on the 1Dx. With sunny conditions the 7D2 should be fine. I haven't used a 150-600 but I love my 100-400 II even with the 1.4TC.

Adding to what I said earlier now that I'm on my PC and can see your sig... Since you do have a 1.4x extender I would definitely throw the 100-400mm on the 1DX with the extender as the main rig, as long as you have the light. If you are now considering bringing both cameras and a couple lenses then it doesn't matter as much, just adjust as needed when you are there. Go to Walmart and grab one of these carts though if you're going to take a lot of gear (if the show will allow them). https://www.walmart.co​m ...il-Folding-Wagon/34109015 (external link) I also wouldn't personally worry all that much about short lenses for static shots. Sometimes you can get some nice close-ups of nose art and that sort of thing, but unless you can get there earlier and be ahead of the crowd somehow then you mostly just walk away with a bunch of snap-shots of planes that include a crowd of people milling around them.

LOL ... I do have one of those and, yes, it would help tremendously. Besides the photo gears, we would also need to bring 2 lawn chairs for the day :-( . I have to find out if the wagon is allowed or not, though.

Not sure I agree with all the advice but my primary experience comes from shooting model aviation rather than full scale. From what I know but I haven't verified this the US & Canada requires that the air show box (the area where any aerobatics are performed) will be at least 500 feet away from the spectator area. In Canada where I live that doesn't mean you won't be under a fly over because the Snowbirds do a few fly pasts over the spectators. My rig for full scale is a 1D4 & 28-300 L IS which covers things like the Snowbirds who have 9 aircraft flying different formations to a 7D2 & sigma 150-500 C for the majority of the show because the formations (if there are any others) are usually 2 or 3 aircraft but there could be a few more when it's a Warbirds event.
I shoot both bodies with all AF points active, in Tv mode & rely on Exposure Compensation (and RAW if forced to) for good exposures but expose for the plane & not the general scene. I set my cameras to the Tv I want to use & set the ISO as needed at full zoom into the empty sky for an F stop around F 8.0 so that I don't end up at high f stops which add the minor dust on the sensor to my photo. I shoot hand held, IS (or OS) on shoot in bursts unless I'm expecting a crossover & for those (the Snowbirds do a few each performance) I start shooting when the plane I'm tracking starts to bank. That doesn't always work because the timing of the pilots is off & they are not really close enough to the other planes path for it to matter. I have not seen the Blue Angels nor the Thunderbirds so I haven't learned their routine.
I use my 1Ds2 & 16-35 for the static stuff or 7D2 & Sigma 12-24 depending on the situation. Depending on the lenses you have available & proximity to the action I think the 1Dx & 100-400 will cover what you'll need for wide formation shots but something like a 70-200 may work better IF you have the 7D2 & 150-600 for the other flying.

I vote for option 3. That should cover a pretty good range. If you need a shorter focal length for static displays just use your phone.

About shutter speed for capturing prop blur: since this is your first air show don't go too slow. Good panning technique takes practice, something that's developed over time. Try 1/320s or 1/250s to start with, or you may end up with many blurred images. You can experiment with lower speeds, just keep an eye on the results.

So I did it.

I decided on 1Dx + Sigma 150-600mm and 7D2 + Canon 24-105mm, mostly for weight reason. I ended up spending most of the time on the big combo.

Ladies and gentlemen of "prop blur experts" ... you earned my respect. Shooting a fast moving target with a heavy hand-held combo set at 1/160 and under was demanding, to put it mildly.

I made a lot of mistakes. I also learned a lot. My head was full of "I should have this" and "I should have that" last night when I looked at the pictures. Next time.

Hell you even managed some blur on a Huey and Cobra, they seem to be some of the hardest of all aircraft to get blur on. I guess Bell kept that rotor combination turning real slow, even though they are not the largest of helicopters. Very well done.

At least you had some nice weather yesterday. I was on parade, as a veteran, at our local Remembrance Parade. We fell in in glorious but cold November sunshine. Just as we got the order to march off it started sleeting, and then we had torrential rain for the whole thing. It was freezing! Especially in a wheelchair. At the end of the service at the Cenotaph I had to fall out and miss the march back through the town I was so cold. I'm just about warmed up now.

Thanks, Alan.

I saw the Cobra banked and turned against a pretty blue sky and showed me the full disc. I was so excited and snapped away at 1/80 ... and was disappointed that even at 1/80 I still could not get the full disc. I have no idea how some of you guys did this at 1/25 !!!! Maybe next time I'll try these shots under 1/80 with a tripod for better support.

Sorry to hear about your bad weather experience. It was approximately 50 degree Fahrenheit here and was nice enough for me. But my wife disagreed. She is not an "aviation person" or "photography person" so it was cold for her sitting in the open for 5 hours. She did watch the show anyway :-)

I thought you did extremely good on the heli"s. Full disc on one of those is not an easy task. I barely do well at 1/60 so pat yourself on the back & say well done for me. This is at 1/60 & he's getting set up to land in just about the same conditions Alan was enduring. It showered down with sleet for roughly 1 1/3 hours then turned to light & cold rain & eventually a heavy cold rain ending the show before the Patrouille De France could get into the serious part of their routine.
