Sundisc - it's in the wild. 60cm and ultra lightweight

Hi, After a positive Kickstarter launch the Sundisc backers are receiving their modifiers now.

They are similar to the Fstopper's 'Flash Disc', but at 60 cm they are larger. They are also deeper so that they can be used with any 6 in flange - including the 'S bracket' and derivatives.
Reviews should start appearing all over the Interweb shortly.

Their remarkable lightweight transforms booming a light out. It's easy to get a stand comfortably off to one side with just a strong swivel adapter and a short length of Alu 16mm rod. And the stand can be lightweight too.

I would agree, if it were called “two small collapsible reflectors with a bit of fabric holding them together“. But it’s called the “Sundisc”. That sounds bigger and much more expensive.

I make no judgement of the actual functionality of the product.... just a commentary on “what’s in a name”.

Both that and the Sundisc are intended for use with Speedlites although Godox's AD 200 (Fresnel head) would be OK too. Together, they make an ultra lightweight, take anywhere, Clam-shell package.

In the test shot below (please forgive!) the Strip Light is deployed horizontally for fill from below. In terms of illumination evenness, the Sundisc is noticeably better; the Strip Light obviously has its Speedlite source Camera Left.

LOL. For you Rico, I found some chromed plastic screw head covers (my whole house is a man drawer - google 'man drawer mcintyre') - carefully Gaffer'd in place. If he looks a little surprised, it's because first I tried pins instead of tape. He(?) also has a very slight Left convergent Strabismus, BTW. (Gaffer'd? Yep, tiny strips formed into small tubes, sticky side out, then flattened . . . )

I also played around with a translucent and shaped Gobo (white Gaffer arrow-head near the Speedlite's Fresnel on the diffusion side of the Strip Box) within the Strip Light to improve spread evenness within the modifier, which definitely helps, So thanks!

I have the Fstopper flashdisc. I want to try this one.

Hi, It certainly is easiest to use mounted on a 6 in flange - i.e something like Godox's S Speedlite mount or equivalent.

It packs small and is super lightweight. So it's very easy to boom with the stand off to one side when required. Both the stand & boom can be 'Speedlite Spec'. It can be used even when you are very short of space or ceiling height.

With the Speedlite's Fresnel set to 50mm the coverage within the modifier is better than I expected. There is a mild hotspot near the Fresnel but a white card arrowhead gobo calms that easily.

Softness is what you would expect from a 60 cm modifier - transitions are pretty smooth. There are enough output samples around if you search diligently - my only model currently is a camera shy 2 yr old Goldie . .

I think it just a matter of time before someone make a bigger size. Alot of third party already make imitation version of F Stopper FlashDisc
