Zoom lens with Internal Focusing

Can anyone advise on what zoom lenses are available to replace 18-55 kit lens but with Internal Focusing and if possible non-extending zoom - budget not yet decided as I wish to see what is actually available - Reason is I am looking for something to use square ND Filter system.

Currently I believe Sigma do a couple 17-50 and a 17-70.

It may be an advantage to consider a wider aperture like 2.8 (but this is only secondary requirement)

Reviews on suggested lens would be helpful

It's been five years since I have owned this lens, but I think this one qualifies.

All the zooms that are wide to telephoto will have extending barrels as you move through the focal range.

A 70-200 has internal focal-range zoom and internal focus, but is all telephoto, not wide.

So really you'll only be looking at medium range zooms (like the 17-50, 15~85, etc flavors) that all have extending barrels through the zoom range, but many do not have rotating front elements

For $175, you really can't go wrong!

If you want IS, this Sigma is a decent lens. I own it and have few complaints.

Thank you. And yes it is internal focus. Does extend while zooming, though. Take a look at PZ.de. That Tamron 17-50 is sharper than the Sigma 17-50 OS. According to TDP, it focuses more accurately, and more consistently, too.

That is true.

Certainly could be used on an APS-C in place of an 18-55 for example and provide no extension of barrel and internal focusing. Though it probably will be softer than an 18-55 STM even when stopped down.

I tried the 17-40 on my 80D. The 18-55 STM was better, with better range, and IS.

I replaced my kit 18-55 with the 17-40 back in the day. But it was an older version of the 18-55 (I think VII), not the STM. The main reasons were the same as yours but also flare resistance. The 18-55 would flare like crazy, while the 17-40 is extremely flare resistant.

But likely the extending zoom will not be as big of a deal as the non-rotating front element, so the other options may well be better and cheaper.
