I have owned the BG-11 for a few years now and only recently got around to trying out the BGM-E11A "AA" battery pack.

I noticed that the "AA" battery pack does not show the shutter count on the battery info, and that it says "BGM-E6" instead of BGM-E11A. ("BGM-E6" is the AA pack for the 5D Mk II)

Is this normal? Does anyone else see the same thing when using the AA pack?

Now I haven't used any AA battery pack for years, but even when using the "real" batteries, they don't always report if they aren't made by, or at least endorsed by, Canon.

My guess would be that the camera firmware needs a serial number from the battery to associate the shutter count with. Since AA batteries don’t report a serial number, the firmware doesn’t maintain a shutter count for them.

Just speculating.

I don't really care about the shutter count.

I am more concerned with the fact that when I put AA batteries in my 5D3 BG-E-11 grip, it reads "BGM-E6" (from a 5D2) when it should really say BGM-11A as per the chart below......

Sounds like just a user interface bug. The 5Diii code probably started as a branch off the 5Dii, and somebody just forgot to change the grip designation in this instance.

My Canon Grip for my 7D2 doesn't show much information when using AA cells either just the bars on the top screen. Personally I don't care as my (rather old Sanyo Eneloops) perform so much better than my LP-E6 and LP-E6n batteries that it is pretty much irrelevant.

I don't use the Canon batteries anymore - they are just an unused backup. Pity I wasted so much money on them!

I had another 5D Mk III owner check, and his does the same thing. So I’m convinced that it is a Canon oversight that the battery info menu reports the wrong AA battery magazine on all 5D Mk III’s.
