I don't know anything about SATA. My disk utility says one thing and about this Mac something else.
My laptop that has and SSD drive updated to APFS automatically with High Sierra. Apple told me I could update to AFPS on an older Mac with HDD from safe mode. It still won't let me and I thought ti may be because it was Mac OS extended. However about this Mac says HFS+

Both are the same! HFS+ is the formatting scheme Apple has used for years (since 1998) up to and including OS 10.12.6 (Sierra). For OS 10.13 Apple changed the formatting scheme to APFS, but so far only for SSDs.
