Great Horned Owl.....in the dark

Took my dog out late last night before bed and spotted the silhouette of an owl in a neighbor's tree. The big bird was kind enough to be patient while I got my camera and tripod set up. This is the second time I've seen it and the best pics I've gotten yet.....bad as they are.

It was drizzling rain and pitch black outside; and the moon was obscured by clouds so I guessed at focus by trying to sharpen his outline as best I could.

The owl was about 75' away so I cranked ISO up to max on my old 7D and shot at 4-6 seconds with my Canon 100-400 lens at F5.6. I was amazed that it sat relatively still for these long exposures.

And....as an added bonus, I did a little research on this owl and learned that those ear like tufts of feathers are called "plumicorns"!

All in all, I'm just thrilled to see an owl.....much less actually capture an image of it in the dark on a rainy night!

Enjoy........

Ok, can't even complain when you consider its a 6 second exposure on a bird in the wild. Very cool.

Very best,
