OK, probably been asked a bunch but I couldn't find a thread that was specific -

But if I wanted to upgrade to a lens that performs like the 24-70 L with it's fast focusing and sharpness, do the similar Sigma and Tamron copies compare?

And a side note, what about the Sigma f4 vs Sigma f2.8? Not sure how often I would need the 2.8 aperture.

Thanks

I have the sigma 24-70 2.8 (also on the 7D2). I’ve used the lens all summer/fall this year and absolutely love it
I get great results with the lens, but I’ve never done a comparison between it and the canon. I tried out the same lens by Canon and also liked it a lot, but the sigma has a much better price point. I tried a friends tamron as well but like the feel and focus speed of the sigma.

All of the paddock shots at this link were shot with the sigma 24-70 2.8. : http://www.jefflowe.ca ...ekend-speedfest-may-2017/ (external link)

The longer track/panning were all taken with the sigma 70-200 2.8.

This was my first major event with both lenses..

Great shots!

So you did feel the tamron was slower?

Thanks! :-)

IMO the Tamron felt like it lagged when on AI Servo compared to the sigma. I didn’t use the Tamron extensively, only just to compare fit/feel/basic use. I now have a camera bag full of Sigma lenses (also picked up the 150-600). Love em all.

And should I consider the f4 version?

I use 2.8 a lot more than I thought I would.
It provides a bit more flexibility IMO.

I had the original Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC... for about a week. I was completely underwhelmed by its AF speed, and its IQ output at f/2.8. It did accomplish one thing. I now know I have no use for f/2.8 zooms. I had a 70-200 2.8, too. Ditto. Zoom=convenience. f/2.8=size&weight, not convenience.

well it really has been talked to death.

here's one I shot with the Canon 24-70L II the other night. I was an early adopter of this lens and it is my choice today.

The newest Canon is tops, but the Tamron f2.8 with VC (vibration control) beats the older version Canon L in most regards.

Im a wedding photographer

My previous studio partner had a Tamron

It sucked in terms of performance and IQ. I was never impressed with the shots from the lens and prayed that I never had to deal with a heavy crop

The sigma results have been mixed from what I can read with the wedding crowd. I was going to wait for it but ended up borrowing a 24-70V2 from a friend. Its a great lens but I was I prime shooter. I purchased the 24-70 L the next day

But the final straw for me was a busy schedule with 30 weddings. I just got sick and tired of switching primes at receptions and events. So I broke down and sold the 35L and purchased the 24-70 F/2.8. After a few weddings, I dont even think about the 35L anymore. The 24-70 is prime sharp at F/2.8 and Im OK with the bokeh.

The color results, focus speed and flexibility of the 24-70 made it my most used lens for 2017. I also got the Sigma 85 Art. I rarely have the 24-70, 85 Art or the 50L off a body and use these 3 lens for 90% of the work along with or 7D2 and 17-55 for the wedding side of things

I personally would not touch a Tamron 24-70 nor the Sigma 24-70. Both are not close to the Canon 24-70 Version 2 L

If i was not shooting weddings than I would have the lens. Its a great lens. the IS on it makes it worth consideration. The IS is going to let you easily hand hold at 1/30. Im seeing guys hitting shots right and left 1/15-1/20 hand holding. I came very very close to getting it. I shoot the 24-70 F/2.8 at 1/80 and can get away with that but most of the time im over 1/125.......1/30 is a huge consideration. If the subject isnt moving your going to get the shot with a flash. I almost got the F/4 is version. came very close

I doubt you can tell the difference in photos from the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens vs ones from the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. However, your bank account will. ;-)a
