Looking forward to another year of hunting in 2018 -- PLEASE JOIN US!

Below, I'll quote the first post from the original thread (from New Years Day 2015) to give newcomers an idea of what we're doing here. The short version is this: each month we pick five topics, and then spend the month trying to photograph those topics. I'll update this post each month with the new topics. I'm selecting the topics for January and will be adding them to this post soon, maybe even tonight. After that, I'll ask for volunteers or I'll message active Hunters to ask them to take a month. If no one volunteers or if someone volunteers and then for some reason can't or for whatever reason doesn't make their picks, I'll just go ahead and pick them myself.

MichiTimm wrote in post #17360162 (external link)
The idea behind this is to get out and shoot more – and to look for subjects where perhaps you ordinarily wouldn’t.

I’m going to list five topics/subjects and over the course of the month I’ll take photographs representing each one – or at least representing my interpretation of each one. Basically, anything goes. If one of the subjects is “red” and for whatever reason that inspires me to take a photo of something yellow, I’m okay with that – just so it gets me to look for photos in places I might not ordinarily look for photos. In the past, I've found that if a word such as "red" is on the list I'll find myself looking at all things red all month long -- and that's kind of the point. I’m not sure it’s really a “competition”, other than with yourself, but I wasn’t sure where else to post this.

At the end of the month I’ll post five photos. It'll probably be one of each word, but not necessarily. I hope you’ll join me, and share your results at the end of the month. And if you do join me and share your work, perhaps you might want to volunteer to pick five words/topics for an upcoming month.

One approach I've used in the past is to take a photo of everything on the list as early in the month as I can, and then the rest of the month I'll be looking for opportunities to improve on what I already have. So I might take a crappyish snapshot of some stairs today, and then next week try to find prettier or more interesting stairs or try to get them in more interesting light, or find a whole 'nother interpretation of "stairs" altogether where I'm shooting something in nature that reminds me of stairs. Anyway, if you decide to go along you may be surprised at how much time you spend looking for something that fits your idea of "almost pretty" and how much fun you have deciding on how best to photograph it. I hope so!

I'm going to use this post as a list of each month's topic-pickers. If anyone who was a topic-picker any month last year would be willing to volunteer to take a month this year, let me know and I'll add you to the list. After that, I'll open it up to anyone else who was active in last year's thread, and then to newcomers to this year's thread.

Every time I visit here I wonder at the imagination of Hunt, Olmstead and Vanderbilt in designing/creating this 6950 acre estate.

Wonder:
I was just trying to get something magical/unusual/wondrous by playing with sun flares with a wide angle lens.

Star:

I first took a photo of historical marker for something called the blue star highway, but then decided to take a close-up of the actual star on the sign and use it for a double exposure.

Shape:
Was driving through Spartanburg taking some shots to test a new K1000 and saw the shape of this roof on an old drive-in restaurant.

Mine:
This was the hardest one for me. Had just about given up and was going to just take some shots of anything that is "mine", but then I was strolling through an old junkyard and came across whatever the hell this is. Sure looks like a mine entrance, but I didn't actually go up to the door and look or go in or anything. Looked like a trap, lol.

Tree:
Didn't wan't to take a photo of an actual tree, so I kept on the lookout for cool leaves or shadows all month long.

Biltmore? I haven't been yet, but my sister said she'd take me and my wife soon because she has a couple extra passes. I think I'll bring a camera!
