What are some things you ask or test when buying a used lens?

Greetings,
I have bought a few lenses before and asked the normal questions and checked for the normal wear. But when buying a more expensive lens like L lenses, ect. What are some more in-depth things you check or ask? Especially for older version 1 L lenses.

Normally I ask stuff like:
-Did it have a filter on for the whole life of the lens?
-are you the first owner?
-has it ever been repaired?

And I check things like
-scratches or fungus on the glass
-any wobble of any of the parts
-smooth and fast AF
-any damage to filter threads on the lens

What else do you normally check?

If the lens has IS, how well does it work?
Does it make any unusual noise when in use?

Also ask the seller if the lens can be returned if it malfunctions.

I like to look at (and get a copy of) the original bill, appreciate if I can get the Canon box as this makes things easier when I sell the lens later in my country. When I buy on a national photo forum instead of getting the chance to meet people face to face, I like to browse through some of the threads the seller posted in and take into consideration the number of posts, a way to weed out black sheep or fly-by-night operators. When the price seems absurdly low I look elsewhere and don't even waste time asking questions.

I actually had to ask that once when I met a guy to buy a lens. He said he knew nothing about cameras and his friend gave him the very expensive L lens. I walked away and told all my photography friends incase they knew someone who was "missing" a lens

One more thing to consider...I've read that some older lenses are no longer being serviced by Canon. That may or may not play a role in your buying decision.

Yes Canon service here does not CLA or repair anything over 10 years old

Are you sure abut this? I mean, I have never heard of service being offered based solely on the age of a lens. . It is normally based on whether a lens has been discontinued or not, and how long ago the model (or version) was discontinued. . There are current lenses that have been around for well over 10 years, and according to what you have said, Canon service would refuse to service the ones that were made over 10 years ago, even though they are the very latest, most current model.

You may want to look into that deeper to confirm what you have said here, because it seems to me that you may have your facts mixed up.

If they don’t have a dated sales receipt you can check the date code on the lens mount (two letters followed by four numbers). That tells when the lens was manufactured.

Yes, but the interest of the sales receipt or detailed bill is that it also can give you a clue about who the owner is and might guard you against a fraudulent sale.
