That is about a $3300-3500 USD equivalent deal, if I am seeing the correct used market value using sources like Amazon, etc. It seems like a good deal at face value, probably depends on the condition and usage of said equipment, coupled with the pros/cons you are personally going to face moving to an older FF and this lens. If you can address an issue you have, and the equipment seems like it is in good shape, then I would say yes.

It really depends on the condition of all the items in question, but it sounds like it might be a good deal value wise. Is it a straight up trade of gear or do they want you to add cash on your end? I suggest going to FM to get an idea of recent prices for those items in similar condition. A 1DX can be anywhere from a little below $2,000 for one with some wear, up to around $2,500. The 300mm's are going for around $2,200, maybe $2,300, in good condition and the 1DsIII should be around $900 unless it's a real beater.

Having previously owned both of those bodies and the lens I think I would consider making the trade if I felt comfortable I could resell the gear and make (at least) a $500-$600 profit and then I would probably repurchase a 1DX (or another body depending on needs). Of course, that's me sitting here in the US with easy access to a robust used gear market. Your realities may be different in Norway, it might not be worth the effort if it would take a long time resell the gear. I wouldn't personally make the trade in order to keep and use the 1DsIII and 300mm 2.8 IS unless I really, really, needed the 300mm. I used the 1DsIII for a long time, and it is a great camera, but the 1DX is just so much better (for my needs at least).

Whilst the 1DS3 is still a great camera by any standards it simply does not have the ISO/speed/AF capabilities of the 1DX. For my uses (Wildlife) this is critical so, much as I like the 1DS3, I could not recommend one in exchange for a 1DX - it just doesn't do the same jobs! However, if you like to work a little slower, in reasonable light, then the 1DS3 is still a great piece of kit.

The Canon 300 F2.8 L IS (Mk1) is simply a cracking lens and probably the sharpest lens that I have except, possibly, my Canon Macro. The AF is very fast, accurate and it tracks moving subjects superbly. It also takes both 1.4 and 2 x extenders very well.

It is all down to what you shoot, if speed and less than ideal light are what you need then I would keep the 1DX and save for a 300 F2.8.

Just my thoughts.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I would do it in a heartbeat. Any takers on such a trade here in the States? :-)

The main deal in this exchange would be the lens. I personally wouldn't go through with this and would wait til I could buy the lens outright. The 1DS mkIII is older and doesn't have any warranty. The 1Dx is an improvement and newer. The question is if you want to backtrack to get the lens.

Im not diong this trade anyway, i simply love the 1Dx too much :)

However i hope that someday i get the 300mm for it, but at the moment the 70-200mm with the 2x extender has to do the work for me
