You are all so very very kind, in more ways than one. Thank you very much!

And Joeseph, yes, I think you might be right.

I took a pic of nifty. It's a bit outside the time frame of the theme, but it does have a wee bit of red...

I’ve never seen the inside of a lens. Educational pic for me Levina, sorry about the circumstances though

Ha! I'm even awesomer as I managed to put it all back together. Took me about two hours today to finally line up the pieces correctly. Unfortunately it doesn't work well now. Auto focus works but in the sense that it goes back and forth, back and forth incessantly without actually ever finding focus, so it's manual focus only now. However, even as a MF lens it's unusable as I get constant err 001 messages. I looked it up and it means that communications between lens and camera is faulty. I've cleaned the contacts on both lens and camera but to no avail. I think something was definitely damaged inside the lens when it fell. I'm permanently retiring my nifty if alone because I'm afraid it might damage the camera. Not sure if that's possible, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks everybody for the moral support and more!

probably for the best - I've heard of folks with a nifty stuck on their camera, and I think it is because the dust ring at the back works loose & gets itself jammed on the camera contacts.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", 1D MK II converted for IR, and now an M5

Thanks for the confirmation, Joeseph. I just don't feel confident using the lens this way. And after one or two shots I get the error 001 and nothing works. I have to turn off the camera, turn it back on and sometimes I even have to remove the battery and put it back in. Then I can take another shot, maybe two and we're back in error 001 mode. So yeah, I'm going to give it a nice little spot on a shelf somewhere. :-)

Clare and I have pm'd and Euro Nifty will be coming my way soon.
I'm happy with this solution and grateful, Jo. But I still do consider it a loan. And I will post in the Nifty thread!
