Sigma focus issues and their customer service

I bought a 35 1.4 art and after using it a few times I quickly realized it had some focus issues but I wanted to attribute it to user error. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. I MFA’d to my 6D with no difference. It then sat in my case for a few months as I was out of my return period and I was actually pissed st myself for not sending it back sooner. I bought a 5D4 last November and was hopeful it would focus fine on that camera but it did not. I MFA’d tonthat canera as well and it STILL would hit focus approx 2 out of every 20 shots and that was with a static subject in excellent lighting. If the subject was moving or lighting not great you shouldn’t even mount lens to camera. I took some sample shots for sigma on a tripod at 1/500 and they were still out of focus using center point on my 5d4. I contacted sigma and ended up sending it in under warranty to have them calibrate the lens. I received it back last week and if anything it seems worse on both of my cameras. I honestly feel it is a defective lens but I am getting no response back from the guy I have been dealing with at sigma. I currently have a $900 paperweight in my pelican case. I will not use rheblens on a shoot with fear of missing a shot. Anyone else dealt with this and what did you do? Attached is a Dropbox link with samples with it mounted on a tripod using a remote so I could be absolutely positive there was no camera shake.

Agreed those shots do not look too good from a focus point of view.
Before you take it further have you tried live view?

I’ve tried everything. I talked to sigma again and they want me to send in my camera and lens this time. My lens was gone for 3 weeks by itself. It’s really not a good time for me to be without my main camera for that long. I have shoots lined up and my backup is supposed to be heading in for a cleaning.

https://www.service-center-locator.com .../sigma-service-center.htm (external link) lists four Sigma repair locations in Alabama. I don't know how close any are to Dothan AL but maybe consideration taking the body/lens combination to the facility and discuss with a technician. I would call first to discuss the feasibility of this approach. At least here in the Philadelphia area, the repair shops are independent but they do Sigma warranty work and are often easy to work with. The one I used several years ago is a retail facility as well and I happened to buy a tripod that was attractively priced.

I took a look at the samples you posted to Dropbox. Do you have any examples outside in regular daylight? Try shooting something with more contrast so that we can get an idea of how it looks.

Unfortunately there is no in-house service center in Alabama. They all have to ship them off which is the same thing I can do from my house.

You attempted to sell a 35mm Art (with dock) last October. Is this the same lens?

It is. That’s why it was removed. I was hoping it was user error but once I saw it wasn’t I decided not to sell it. I rarely ever used t as I have the 24-70 but thought it would be a nice addition as a prime.

Well this has an easy solution. . Just don't send the backup in at this time. . Problem solved.

I am curious - what kind of cleaning is it that you cannot just do yourself?

A sensor cleaning - and I mean a really thorough wet cleaning - is something that anybody can do themselves in, like, a minute and a half. . No need to send it in for that because it requires no expensive cleaning equipment, no special knowledge, and no skill. . Heck, a monkey could probably do it perfectly with just a week of training!

What other kind of cleaning is really necessary, that you can't just do yourself in a minute or two?

Ok, yes, but ...... are any of those 18 points really necessary?

I mean, sometimes we do things just because it makes us feel better, but there is no actual, real-life benefit to doing it that we can notice. . Do you think that perhaps this is the case with the 18 point cleaning service?

I used to send my stuff in for this "check and clean" kind of servicing, but after a few years I realized that it just never made any actual difference in anything at all. . This post isn’t about what I am doing with my back up but to answer your question, yes. I believe they may be necessary. I have owner my 6D for a couple years and have never sent it in. It would make me feel better knowing the service center has done their 18 point inspection on it. I may be having it done later as I believe I might end up sending in canera and lens to be calibrated but I am going to order a new dock and try that first.

I would call sigma and ask to speak to a manager

I remember a few yrs back someone else had a similar issue. You will have to send your camera and the lens in question to sigma to have them calibrate to your body. If It cant be calibrated, then I would say it is defective and Sigma should replace

you need to get a manager involved at Sigma

I’m trying to get back to office but I was thinking about what you said and while it may have better focusing outside, what about all the times I need it inside in less than stellar lighting?
