Feel free to comment and ask questions on this thread.

This forum runs now on AMASS 2.0 forum software by yours truly.

---------------

PLEASE NOTE THAT FORUM WILL NOT SEND OUT ANY EMAILS. EMAILS WILL START WORKING IN A DAY OR TWO. Email will be started when DNS is fully resolved, and only after test are fine the full feature set it running.
NEW MEMBER REGISTRATION IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS.

---------------

The main focus on AMASS 2.0 is to add rest of the needed features, improve usability and mobile usage, fix bugs, improve all. The goal was to keep normal usage same despite of new stuff, so you do not have re-learn anything. I think this is so.

MAIN CHANGES:

  • Moved to a new server (minor changes really, but much better SSD's)
  • Comprehensive marketplace feedback system. Start giving feedback from the thread in question. Fully transparent to all members. Stats always added to relevant places. 4 rating items, text, editable, Heads Up popups.
  • Global on/off switches for forum filtering.
  • Notification email system with settings, cancel links. Email server will take some days to get fully functional and online, so notification email system will not be on today.
  • Password reset improved.
  • Changes to LIKE (layout/undo/bugfixes/stats/top500 etc.).
  • Layout improvements everywhere, better use of space, better looking, more responsive, faster, smoother.
  • Broken images handling improved.
  • Image upload improved, sharpening with settings, max.image size is now 1600*1600.
  • You can limit pixel size of embedded images that are automatically downloaded (mobile data save), view them by click/tap.
  • A "darker" style (default for new members/guests). You can pick the old white style, too.
  • A lot of user interface usability improvements.
  • Follow forum (two modes), new posts has a "followed forums" view.
  • Margin setup revised, make your own margins (visual setup tool) for different page types.
  • Thousands of fixes, improvements and bug fixes.
  • Metadata editor and gallery add/remove made easier.
  • Lens detection vastly improved. Best guesses can be manually picked. You can add to your gear in metadata editor. Flickr EXIF retrieval speed 3x faster.
  • Sort your gear list.
  • Report post can be done also by clicking the report text: a choice of reasons are given.
  • Search UI improvements. Search is now available for guests. New bbcode tag: SEARCH, initiated in search UI command "SHARE".
  • Ignored member post peek.
  • Thread page image mini-browser for quick view of images on page (click a thumb takes you to the image, CTRL+space takes you to the next image).
  • Lightbox (glasses) functionality revised. Fits to view by default. Double-click to view image in lightbox, mouse wheel up to 100%, mouse wheel down to fit), click to exit lighbox. Zoom control button.
  • Drones, film camera, microscope, telescope (generic manufacturers) and latest gear added to gear database.
  • Photobucket image ban handling (personal and public) settings.
  • All scrollable lists on iOS devices are now fast/smooth. Page scrolling tuned (improved scrolling to broken images, when page loads slowly etc).
  • Editor tools' positions can be saved and automatically restored when editor is opened. If tools go over the sides, they can be called to view.
  • Editor preview zoom (optional). Lots of new settings for the editor in FYEO.
  • FYEO on/off command response clarity revised when you change a setting.
  • Galleries are improved, for example if you click an image in gear gallery, you can continue viewing that gallery in thread pages. Best of image mode in member gallery. Quick links to tons of metadata galleries on main gallery index. More thumbs per page, mobile layout improved. Add to gallery button always seen when applicable (no more hover -> commands).
  • SSL ready (soon to be implemented). Technical background systems updated (PHP 7 etc).

AS THE SERVER IS ALSO CHANGED, THE DNS (NAME SERVER) SYSTEM UPDATE OVER ALL THE NET TAKES ANYTHING FROM 3 TO 48 HOURS. UNTIL YOUR COMPUTER/MOBILE KNOWS THE NEW SERVER IP, IT COMES TO THIS PAGE.

Partially updated DNS may get you broken images or other symptoms, so such problems are inevitable in some networks. They will go away in 48 hours max. You can see the DNS update progress in page https://dnschecker.org/#A/photography-on-the.net (external link). When an IP there is 162.252.87.118 it points to this old server.

Here's a more detailed changelog of most things. Some things are of course not there, can't expect to remember everything done in last 2 years :)

Comprehensive marketplace feedback system. Start giving feedback from the thread in question. Fully transparent to all members and member feedback stats and feedback can be viewed easily. Sort and filter. Member feedback stats always added to relevant places. 4 rating items (only 1 required), texts (not required), editable. Heads Up popups about every action to respective members.

You can now follow a forum. This can be started on bottom of each forum index page, or in FYEO (Follow forum page). Following a forum means: from the moment you start following the forum, all new threads are automatically added to your followed threads list with notifications on. All manually followed threads are preserved. To let you know which threads were automatically followed and which were followed by your own actions, text "(FF)" is added to thread lists next to FOLLOWED label, and in notification list next to automatically added threads. This allows you to easier mass-unfollow threads in FOLLOWED+OWN page. In forum lists, followed forums are marked with a "FOLLOWED FORUM" label.

Like interface and popup improved.

Likes: there is now page for TOP 500 like stats. Separate lists for TOP 500 members and TOP 500 threads. Index page has short like stats, too.

Likes: member page shows like ranking (if under 500), given likes count, and a link to a page with all liked posts by the member.

There is a photo loader info on top of each thread page (if there are photos to load in that page). It shows progress of embedded and attached photos' loading on the page. If you click the photo progress counter text (like "5/5 photos loaded", you'll start a small photo browser that appears on every thread page (status stored in a cookie). The image browser lists all photos on that page as thumbnails (filling the placeholders as the images are getting loaded), and clicking an image thumbnail you'll get straight to that image on the page. TIP: click a thumbnail in that image browser: after that CTRL + SPACE goes to next photo on page, until you click something else on that page.

Display size limiter: lets you limit size of images that are automatically downloaded to your browser. Click each image that is under that limit to download it in place. Display size limiter does not apply to editor ot thread peek.

Allowed embed size is now 1600'1600. In upload tool you can pick either 1280 or 1600 (inside the tool).

Password recovery process improved. - process more solid - 12 hour reset timeframe - process clarity improved a lot - extra tips to recover passes from browsers

Lightbox (glasses): Default lightbox mode is now "zoom to fit", it will show to whole image as much as it can fit it to current window, but never exceeds larger than the original. You have a "zoom to 100%" command when in "zoom to fit" mode. If you are in "zoom to 100%" mode, then "zoom to fit" command is shown. If image fits to window, no zoom commands are shown.

NEW TAG: Search bbcode tag: build the tag from a current search in search UI, command "Share". From the resulting dialog copy the tag and paste to any post. Tag looks like [SEARCH]K3um9Bc[/SEARCH] and renders to view as a box with search parameters shown (click the box to do the search). Filtered by permissions available. Tags are re-usable by all.

Search automation: when an automated search is done, parameters are not added to search history, unless you change a result page or click the search command manually.

Search: get back to search results when search UI is open (in FYEO settings): ESC key.

Hiding "three times reported" spammers (which are not banned yet) is now better.

Search history has a "clear history" command.

Quote length limiter (visual cut in thread pages) has been improved.

Search history has now 100 slots.

Heads up history shows now 250 last items. Heads up in different browser tabs/windows knows if there is anything to show after you close it in one of them, and closes other popups in short time. In FYEO heads up page different types of head ups's are colored.

Forum filtering: a global on/off switch for filtered forums (shown on all relevant pages). The switch is shown if there are filtered forums set.

FYEO: notifications: you can clear each forum's notifications individually.

FYEO: Post editor settings (enable/disable all new features etc.) : Preview zoom (25/50/75/100%) (experimental). Icons or text buttons selectable in settings. Tools follow vertical scroll. Toolbox position automation. Fixed or auto width.

Post editor: post editor stays in window top after orientation and window size changes.

Post editor: autopreview is now more stable.

Thread pages: that small reply info on top of a post is shown in full also in mobile screens.

Thread page: on the post's side, member info is show always in full with items that have content: post count, gallery count (as a link, if over zero), best of count (if some), likes count (if over zero), joined, location (if filled).

Image load checker and "live" load error display: stability revamped, image loader counter seen on thread pages. Optional thread page image mini-browser with CTRL+SPACE key command to next image on page. This is a good tool for those who want to quickly browse images in a page, and for mods check an overview for broken images on page (checked images that are tagged as broken are not included, only includes broken images that are marked good but do not respond or give 404)

Styling and layout: a big job done here: revamped/improved in everywhere, in subtle ways. Better screen estate usage, readability improved, better mobile experience. Selectable styles. Galleries have more thumbs per page, login form fits small screens well etc. Thread page side info follows page scroll within a post. Lots and lots of small things fixed. Html source validity verified, page rendering and CSS vastly improved (automatic mobile CSS with less resource usage).

Margin rendering revamped. Fully customizable page margins with 14 page types separately (or globally) adjustable to taste if needed, using a graphical adjustment tool with visual feedback.

Scrolling to post/image in pages with broken images improved (always finds the correct position).

Member gallery browser in thread pages: you can close the bottom browser if needed. There is a "next photo" command. Best ofs are shown in gallery browser thumbs.

Member gallery browser : Browsing images that are on the same thread page are not added to the browser history, so browser back button brings to you straight to the previous page, not to the previous image viewed on this page.

"to top" margin-click: - when the post editor is open, margin click brings you there. - if search interface is open, margin click brings you there (overrides scroll to editor).

Notifications: you can now close notification popup by clicking/tapping outside of it.

Photobucket image ban handling (personal and public) settings.

Member listing page: search and sort UI revamped. Guest can see member the listing page now.

Report: the text "report" is now a direct command in the post side info: you'll get a list of reasons which then lead to report form. So essentially it is now "click Report -> pick a reason -> write/submit". The old method works, too, (open member info, click Report there) but that report command button has been moved from the left side to top right position and made an actual command button.

Styles: Two (color) styles: "darker" and "paper white". Darker is the new default for new members and guests. Paper white is the legacy white page theme. I personally prefer the darker theme :)

Personal gear list: you can now sort your gear in each category (drag items to sort).

Tons of reported bugs and errors fixed. Like system is now accurate, editing posts with uploaded images is now stable, locked threads can be liked, several metadata related bugs resolved, literally hundreds of fixes and improvements.

Gear database/EXIF: EXIF Lens detection vastly improved. Does not pick even best guesses if not absolutely sure, but offers you best guesses to be manually picked. You can add to your gear from inside the metadata editor. Fastest available shutter speed is now 1/32000.

Drones, film camera, microscope, telescope (generic manufacturers) and latest gear added to gear database. Will add a drone forum and make other changes to forum structure some weeks after update has been done.

Ignored member: you can now peek a post. Ignored posts are reduced in height and masked, they reveal content in full without a reload if needed.

Best of image browsing: there is now a mini (prev/current/next) browser if you click the trophy. The mini browser honors the parameters of last best of page load (i.e. by camera, lens).

Heads up popup: shows now a new items count, and always a scrollbar.

Search: Guests can now use the search system. Seach history is not available to guests, and last search is remembered only during that guest session. Guests can not change default UI settings.

Gallery pages contain now automated search links for cameras and lenses, if filtered by either/both.

Galleries are improved, for example if you click an image in gear gallery, you can continue viewing that gallery in thread pages. Best of image mode in member gallery. Quick links to tons of metadata galleries on main gallery index. More thumbs per page, mobile layout improved. Add to gallery button always seen when applicable (no more hover -> commands). Thread page gallery browser has "next" and close commands.

Search: date selector revamped.

Lots of mod tools improved (no public info of that of course).

Banning: When banned, any page the banned in is shows it clearly withing the next 30 seconds even without a page reload.

Banning: Several types of informative (for members) "over-avatar" ban icons which can be set by mods.

Prev/Next: The list shows now more threads, and automatically centers on the current thread.

All scrollable lists are now very fluid/smooth which natural inertia in iOS devices.

Thread listings: YOURS:X label can be clicked for an automated search for your posts in that thread.

Thread listings: FOLLOWED label can now be clicked for a dialog to stop following that thread. If the follow start was a product of followed forum autofollow, it is shown as FOLLOWED (FF).

Followed thread notifications are now emailed (if set up so in FYEO, default in ON).

Notifications show also hidden forums (filtered forums), even when global forum filter is at "ON" position. There is a label "HIDDEN" next to those forum names.

Member page: best of trophy count shown, leading to member gallery with best ofs only.

Current top 50 Best of'ed members are listed in Best of gallery page 1.

FYEO: all applicable settings are now done with radio buttons. When selected they are automatically saved with a clear message close by. Default values are clearly indicated.

Forum filtering: when G&N forum is first enabled to be shown (either by SHOW command or setting global forum filtering OFF), you'll need to accept an agreement for viewing it. The view agreement is saved in member profile.

Image Upload tool: image quality improved, now has three HQ and tasteful unsharp mask presets (default is medium) and less re-compression. You'll need to accept image upload rules when you open it for the first time.

Handling of uploaded photos when editing posts had several problems. All that is now fixed.

When you edit a post, uploaded photos can be restored to initial versions (separately from the text).

Flickr EXIF reading: speed of Flickr EXIF reading is vastly improved, now each image's EXIF data retrieval takes about 2 seconds.

Gear listing: the long gear listing (search/by manufacturer/all) has been made a tree-like output where you can open/close branches.

Lots of mod tools improved (no public info of that of course). One important tool for public knowledge is "import followers" which lets mods to import and merge followers from one thread to another. This is useful for splitted continuation threads like Endless Talk (77) to add all followers from the previous thread to the new one.

"SSL ready" (soon to be implemented). Technical background systems updated to latest tech (PHP 7 etc).

KNOWN ISSUES:

if you resize a window to small with wide custom margins, the resize will be choppy as the margins are scaled on the fly to keep the content at > 700. This is likely not going to be fixed. Custom margins are meant for large monitors.

Post editing drafts (for EDIT post commands) are purged, as the format of the edit drafting has changed.

Traverse unseen link is "hidden" until all NEW posts seen. NO FIX: A FEATURE, FOR THE MOMENT

Javascript code is not minified, there were some issues with minifier tools causing bugs in the code. Will sort it out soon, until then the initial javascript download is larger (although compressed my the server anyways).

Marketplace feedback listing (detailed) does not have pagination or "show latest 20" sort of limiter. I'll try to add that before someone gets tons of feedback. I'll also see about adding a more concise listing option.

As designed: when avatar/info next to post followed the page top, it fades out slightly. This is as designed: it shows when you are not in top of the post (for example what you arrive to and image via gallery).

A bug (old one, though I got it already): traverse unseen shows for 1 post, even if all are seen.

The last column in thread listings is "likes", that counter is always zero. Will fix that to correct counts tomorrow.

I love, love, love the new 1600 pixel feature. Just a small oddity, I was testing the 1600 px uploads and in a thread I tried both uploading directly and embedding from Flickr the same image which is 1600 pixels wide. The uploaded image displays at slightly less (1573 pixels as measured in PS) than 1600 pixels inline while the embedded Flickr image displays at exactly 1600 pixels. Below is a capture of the two images showing the bottom of the uploaded image and the top of the embedded Flickr image, with the Flickr image being slightly wider:

PS, that is one mean looking instrument you have there. Maybe one day you will do a photo shoot of it with details about it?
