So there was a discussion ages ago on Flickr about how people hide their purchases of camera gear from significant others who many not be happy about them spending so much on camera gear. It was actually very funny and I thought it would be fun to start it again here.

So what are your methods for making secret purchases?

Same here.

Back when I was married, I never tried to hide any photography-related purchases from my wife. . I was forthright about the super-high priority that photography had in my life. . I made it clear before we got married, so there was never any deception from me about how important photography was, and the effect that it would have on my wallet and on my time.

.

I don't think it's right to intentionally hide purchases from one's spouse. . When two people are married, each has the right to know what the other is doing with their time and money.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I don't hide purchases. I try not to buy things I don't need in the first place. I also disapprove of the "I Love Lucy" model of marriage, in which the wife constantly tries to put one over on her husband. If I wanted something more for photography, I'd use money I have that isn't needed for our support. My husband and I don't consult about purchases we know we can afford–he buys books without asking me–but both of us are ethical people.

If someone has to hide purchases they are in the wrong relationship.

My wife doesn't know the difference between an SL1 and a 7D2.... so...

I buy what I want with discretionary funds. (So does she.)

We’re similar to Archibald.
We each have discretionary funds for stuff we each want to do. Hiding will eventually backfire.

I have an old school house hold. We both prefer it. I'm the sole income. I'm quite conservative with gear purchases, but I get what I want, when I want and she benefits from it so she is happy if I do something for myself. And she can buy what she wants too and I pay for it and I don't question it.

Very best,

That's a new one on me! When I enter it into Google, I get "Shop School House on Amazon - Huge Selection & Great Prices."

We are in a similar situation, though. We have the finances to buy what we want. But we are both tight with money. (Those properties often go together!) Anyway, I buy what gear I want. She doesn't know the difference, and I don't tell her because she is tight with money, and there is no need for her to fret. The money is discretionary, does not affect family finances at all.

Confusion and chaos.

It was a Canon 100-400, and it was a bad month. There was one 911 call for my wife. There were four emergency room visits for my daughter, two while she was away on a school trip, and one which included surgery.

"Honey, I really need this lens."

"Okay."

One year later...

I was getting out The Lens™ and my wife said, "What the hell is that?!"

We're coming up on 34 years. We were married on the edge of a hurricane.

Try this version: "old-school household."

My wife and I have a mutual understanding about spending money. We both work. We both make good money. Neither of us is overly frivolous. We don't police each other's spending. If/when she wants a new pair of shoes, or a new car, she will make a purchase. I know she notices movement in my camera-gear closet. She is kind enough to ignore it.

I did try to run a new motorcycle by her a week or so ago. She expressed that $30k for a new toy may be a bit extravagant. Translation: "Go ahead. Make my day. I've been eyeing a new Lexus SUV, anyway." I'll get by with old H-D for a few more years. :)
