"We can 100% confirm that one of the new lenses will be an EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II.

We can also 95% confirm that the second lens will be a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III. All of the tips we’ve seen point to this lens coming, but we haven’t actually seen the “f/2.8L IS III” in writing.
We do not know pricing or when these new 70-200mm lenses will begin shipping.

They had been reporting 2.8 coming later in the year.

It seems 70-200 sells a lot (relatively) so they want to upgrade them... But then again, 50mm is also popular lens and STILL there is no proper 50mm in Canon lineup. What's wrong with Canon?

Of course this is completely subjective and limited but over the weekend a friend of mine did a comparison with the Canon v2 and tamron g2. Very little difference if any, but this wasn't very controlled or scientific. One camera 2 lenses and a lot of switching back and forth. I didnt like the tamron because of the zoom and focal ring were reversed compaired to the Canon, which was kind of uncomfortable and you can't leave the lens hood reversed. I'm sure it wouldn't be that big of a deal once you get used to it. I hope if that do come out with a v3 it's not just marketing.

I'm curious too see how they make this 2.8 lens better than the version 2.

I've had mine for a year or so. I don't remember exactly when I bought it. It's such a great lens. I guess they could reduce the weight some, but as far as the lens itself? I'm with you. It's already great.

My cynical nature is thinking that there are a lot of 2.8 v2's on the second hand market, and Canon knows they don't make anything on them. Tweak the existing design a bit, maybe improve the coatings or make the IS half a stop better, and a lot of people who might think of buying a used v2 will instead buy a new v3 so they have the latest and greatest.

But that's just my cynical nature. :)

Two things that have been talked about is a better MFD and better sharpness at close range.

I have the MkI, but it seems those two things go hand in hand.

Thank you for posting this in the correct forum! :) :)

As to cost, I can't imagine Canon EVER pricing their lenses at the same or more than the most recent Nikon equivalent. Isn't that part of their overall strategy to be less than Nikon?

I will be curious to see how it would be possible to improve on the current lenses.

Egad, tell me they won't incorporate the terrible "Foot/Collar" solution that pioneered on the 100-400mm! Will we have another lens that is hand held 98% of the time by everyone with a tripod collar cemented onto it? Blech.

I even tried to bump this one this morning to keep discussion here.

But it didn't work.

I agree on pricing. The comment about Nikon pricing in the other thread seems off base. If anything we have seen that canon is disinterested in what other manufacturers are doing, and very happy to remain under Sony lens pricing.

Again, other EF mont lenses are likely their greatest concern.

About to say the same thing...these lenses will be massively overpriced out of the gate. It will take a few years to normalize back, but that will still probably higher than the current prices for new.
