Wow, I didn't know DJs toured! These are all a little soft ... I would suggest a little faster ISO and attend to holding the camera still. Beyond that they are very good, interesting, too small for my old eyes, and the crowd shots are fascinating.

DJ's tour all over the world. Tiesto was the DJ in the opening of the Athens Olympics, the next day he was in Swansea (Waless) DJ'ing at a escape in the park.

Dwight - suddenly I don't feel so utterly dumb anymore! Even more shocking for you then: Tiesto (and Carl Cox, Sasha etc.) are commanding fees of up to £60,000 per gig! They don't just TOUR - they get flown by private jet to gigs...! Dandaman_24 - they are cool shots - but have to agree that they are a little bit soft... I do think your crowd shot ROCKS though!! I've often had to 'add' some sparkles cos they juts don't light up the way you'd like them -or at the right moment. This is a super shot! ....

Dizzy, I'm changing businesses if I can get that sort of pay for playing someone else's songs on AV equipment!
Oh, and I am marvelously ignorant!

Dwight:
If it makes it any better: I usually buddy up with the PR girls at gigs, so they can 'spot' for me - this after a particularly embarassing event when we were supposed to shoot Carl Cox live for the promotors: until he actually started mixing the on the decks, I thought he was the 'real DJ's' body guard! (And in the process I lost some precious shots of him horsing around backstage!). I've learnt not to look blank when people ask me if I've seen "so-and-so" cos chances are, I probably just talked to him and didn't have a clue that he was "the number #1 dj!". I just point in a random direction - hoping they'll go away quickly. ..

Dizzy, when I was first shooting at the Maverick Saloon where I do second tier Country musicians, there would often be a bunch of guys humping the equipment in ... I always thought they were just grunts for the real musicians but it turned out that for many, even the #1 guy hauled equipment. Very different from the super-egos at the casino!
I am still appalled that DJs can make so much income from simply playing the recorded songs of others ... what is it that they do that is so special?

Rene: Thanks for the link. I will try to do that.
Dwight: Need some help here..... You suggested to increase ISO on my shots but as dzstudios mentioned, the lights are not constant in this case. So, I shot with ISO 200, SS 10-30 and A at 2.8, I like the effect of the lighting but I have to agree with you, the photos are somewhat soft. When you buff the ISO to say 800 or 1600, increase the shutterspeed and maybe same Aperture, I think the light effect wouldn't be the same because of faster shutterspeed. Is this correct? I tried shooting at ISO 800 and the effect is not the same, the shots are dark and the rays of the light are thinner. What set-up would you suggest for better effects and sharper photos? Next gig here is Kascade April 12; Slinky April 15; and Chicane May 27. I am looking forward for Chicane! :P They really rock!!! And the crowd love them so much! :P BTW, I was shooting here as a hobbyist. Just so happen that I know the organizers so I was able to get close. Of course, I shared the photos to them. I remembered the security were shoeing us out of the stage so I was left at the back stage. When I couldn't hold myself anymore, I approached 1 staff there and requested to take a couple of shots behind Tiesto, I told them, hey! this photo is for you guys..... so he allowed me.. hehehe.... here's the shot. ![]() Cheers! Square

Square, I shoot a lot faster than you and have no trouble with the smoke effects being lessened. With a 20D the noise at ISO800 is very acceptable. How about I suggest bracketing to you ... I use it religiously at concerts ... use your fast drive speed and shoot three frames each burst (I think the camera will do this for you) ... and then you will have something to compare in very similar circumstances ... and I recommend bracketing in any event.
Here's an example from a Juanes concert: Sorry about the first try, the cut&paste of Firefox is still a hit or miss propostion!

Square, you need to go to the User CP area and turn on OK TO EDIT flag.
Also, it would help if you provided a larger version of this photograph as editing always degrades whatever is there.

Dwight,
I changed the status already.... editing by other members allowed now. Next time I will post, I'll upload bigger file. The original version of this photo is at home, so I'll post it maybe later... Thanks Dwight! Square

Although we often, very often bracket - its a super fast moving environment so we often ditch bracketing, to avoid slowing us down. (also causes buffering issues if you're shooting loads) We never drop below 200iso (for several reasons) and our fastest lens is a 2.8 (sometimes we use a 1.8 prime)... And - although your DJ pics are a bit too small to judge - it doesn't SEEM like shake or movement... Soooo - I don't think your DJ pictures are soft because of shutter speed... Rather - there is a kind of 'blended' quality to them - have you maybe put it through a noise reduction package or something? AND - YOUR CROWD shots are superb - so whatever you're doing - its working... maybe just adjust when you're shooting the DJ.? Can you post the DJ pictures a bit bigger?? That way we can pick at them and see what can be done. ..
