Default Battery lifespan

Hey guys, roughly how long does your charge last with one fully-charged battery? I have a couple of BP-511 batteries. One of them had been in the charger all day, I took it out and it lasted 10 minutes before completely shutting off. I have a second one that lasts longer, but am noticing it too is starting to drain quickly. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Are there better batteries to get other than the Canon one that comes with the camera? A camera grip with two batteries is really not a preferred option for me.

Thanks in advance.

Something is definitely wrong. I have a BP511A. I charged it for just over an hour. So far, I have taken well over 300 pictures (approx 100 w/flash) all with AF and Image Stabilization on and no word of a lie, the battery life indicator on the cam has not dropped a bar yet. If it's happening with both batteries suddenly, could the charger be toast?

3 years is the average life of Li-ion batteries. doesn't matter how many charges I believe, it's just that the chemical reaction inside starts to degrade as soon as they are manufactured.

The batteries of my 10D were getting worse when I traded it in. Battery life was getting shorter. That was after 1 year (say, 20.000 exposures). Get some new batteries....

Lithium Ion batteries typically will give you 350-500 charge cycles. This can be lower or higher depending on conditions in which they are used and charged.

The charge cycle means fully discharged and then fully charged. So if you use 50% of the charge and then fully charge it that would be one half of a charge cycle. If you discharge the battery only 50% and then recharge fully every time you should be able to do this 700-1000 times before the battery is exhausted.

Lithium Ion batteries as, stated above, do have a sort of best before date but this depends on the temperature in which they are stored. Cooler is better and even in your freezer is good as long as you allow them to warm up before using them.

I recommend the Sterlingtek batteries. I bought a pair for under $30 shipped.

Your batteries are showing end-of-life symptoms, throw them away and buy some more. Canon don't make batteries, they badge cells made by someone else. I picked up some generic BP511's from an HK ebay seller and they last about 50% longer than the Canon-badged items that came with the camera.

This is the link to the sticky in the accessories forum. I bought 6 (3 pairs) of sterlingtek batteries for my 20D for $67 dollars shipped. With no flash, I have taken 800-900 shots with battery left over. In addition, I am using the Canon charger to charge them.
