Yes, as Madweasel suggested, there are rumors that Canon is placing its 2nd-Gen IS in all of its top L lenses ... and it sure seems like that is what they're doing with the "Long Bird Lenses" right now

Would be nice to see superb IS capability on the 180mmL macro, but IMO it's not essential since I always use mine with a tripod. What I would really like to see is a completely Manual-Focus 200-300mm macro lens, with no AF at all, designed to give you even greater "working room" for your shots, and even greater precision in the focusing element.

The very act of putting AF in any lens means you either 1) reduce the degrees of precision/rotation in the MF capability ... just to allow the AF to work ... or 2) you leave the precision MF ability in, which makes the AF a waste of time because it takes too long to work.

And I can count the times on one hand that I have ever used AF in my 180mm lens. I just can't see too many people skipping around hand-hodling any 180mm macro, using AF to nail their shots. The 180 mm lens is a tank and is best used for planned, artistic, compositional macro work on a tripod ... not high-mobility hand-held macro work on the fly.

For this reason, I hope the whatever "new" LONG macro lens Canon comes out with adds IS, but what I really hope the new lens does is drop AF altogether in favor of ultra-precision focusing (360-720 degrees of rotation from 1:1 to infinity) ... rather than the rather limited and less precise mere 270-degrees of rotation that it has now.

I heard that new Sigma 105 with OS and HSM came out.
Interestingly, it's weather-sealed.
If anyone gets their hands on them, please do a quick review on it!

Canon 40D with Canon 100mm 2.8. Although not strictly speaking a macro lens, I also get excellent results with a Raynox DCR-250 on the G12.

After years of salivating and dreaming, I am as of this evening (thanks to a CL advert) a new owner of a EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Have a LOT to learn - thanks to all here, as I've been reading much. This is an interesting world… and many of you have done an excellent job of capturing the intricate beauty of it all.

Since the date of this forum, Tamron is coming out with a re-engineered 90mm Macro lens with VC. It has just been priced at $849 at B&H, and will start selling on Nov 30. Also, the Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro will be Off sale on Dec 1, from $899 back to $1000+ If your on the edge between these two lenses it is time to get ready and jump.

Me too use 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro. Also old Canon Macro Lens FD 50mm f/3.5, to which I have Canon Life Size Adapter. And with FD/AI adapter + AI/PK adapter I can use it in my Pentax K-30. Very Nice, thank you!

Sigma 150mm OS version. Due to the greater working distance the AF is fast very fast. It might hunt sometimes in low contrast situations but a quick turn of the ring fixes that easy. I do use it in MF most of the time though.

But if the subjects are not at a close distance I will usually swap out the 150 and use the zoom instead.

I use a Canon Normal EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens - I have found it fantastic and really crisp images...still learning all the trick features on it.

Cheers
Andy
