Default Canon 500D 67mm

I have a Canon 70-200 F/4L Canon lens and want to use the Canon 500D on the lens. It's a 67 mm lens. The Canon lens site says they make them. Has anyone found a store that carries them yet? If so, where? Many thanks.

500D?

Are we talking about a camera?

There is a 300D or "Digitsal Rebel" that will be on the shelves soon,. ( I don't think that it is really available yet)

But you mention 67mm twice?

So I don't see the connection to the Digital Rebel there,...

Could you clarify what product you are referring to?

I don't see where I said anything about 67mm twice. However, the lens is 67mm. Canon makes a close-up lens attachment called either 250/500 D which in effect provides a shorter minimum focusing distance with no loss of light.

According to Canon's website they make them in 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, 72mm and 77mm. I can't find the 67mm at any websites.

Thanks

I got my 500D at B&H

Do a search for "500D Close-up Lens".

I don't see one for 67mm, maybe you can get a step ring for the 72mm (that's the one I have). I've ordered the cheep 50mm f/1.8 and it's threads are 52mm. I got a 52mm-72mm step ring so I can use my other 72mm filters on it. I'll try my 72mm 500D close up on it when I get it.

I've searched for the 67mm version for my 70-200 just as you did. I contacted Canon and they apologized for the mis-information and recommended I choose a different filter size and use stepping rings to accomodate. I haven't yet decided on which combination of 500D filter size and stepping rings to settle on.

Currently intend to use with 500D:

70-200 f4L (67mm)
Tamron 24-135 (72mm)

Planned:

28-135 IS USM (72mm)
100-400 f4L (77mm)

*Would using a 72mm 500D restrict FOV on a 77MM thread size lense?

**Are there any issues with using a 77mm 500D on my 67mm thread size 70-200?

Any thoughts or questions on the matter?

Bump - for the view.

Retiredtrader, What did you decide for your setup? Still looking?

Thanks!

For Sketcher and others. Thanks for the comments. I decided to buy an Adorama step-up-ring 67mm - 72mm and the 500D at 72mm. I haven't received them in the mail yet. When I get them, I'll shoot some pics and see how they work together. I'll have to look up how to post some pics here and then post for you to see.

Adorama was the only place I found a 67mm - 72mm step-up-ring. Anybody know of others, as I don't know the quality of the ring yet. How good can it be for $7.95?

So what is the 500D? It seems like a diopter, but what would be the equivalent in other brands (i.e. +1, +2, +4??)

I think the Nikon 5T and 6T are Nikon equivalents.

500D = +2 250D = +4

As in: 1000/2 = 500, 1000/4=250

The 250D and 500D are close up attachments used with an EF lense to provide a shorter minimum distance with no loss of light. The 250D/500D series incorporates double-element achromatic design for maximum optical performance while the 500 (no 'D') series features single-element construction for maximum economy. The 250D is optimized for lenses between 50-135mm, while the 500D works best with telephoto lense from 70-300 mm. Manual focusing is recommended.

Think of them as dual element diopters.

I just got my new $65 50mm f/1.8 and it's got 52mm threads. My 72mm 500D works great on it with the 52mm-72mm step up ring.

Side note, that 50mm f/1.8 is great. I wanted to get a faster lens then my 28mm-135 USM IS so I can see how much I would shoot at that speed so if I can ever afford the 70-200 IS f/2.8 I'll know I'd use it that much.

Great explanation! Thank you. Is there any loss of sharpness or image quality when one of these is used?

Well, you're shooting through more glass, so there's always the risk of some loss of quality. However, it's Canon glass, and the 250D and 500D have two achromatic elements to correct any fuzziness that might normally appear when using a non-D close-up lens.

So to answer your question - probably not a heck of a lot, if you can even detect any at all I'd be mildly surprised.
