So Jerry... based on stuff I see published in stuff like Baseball America and the like, these are very very good. I still kind of like the full body shots rather then the tight crops, but I seem to be a bit out of step with what is industry standard.
The other thing I notice in your first and last shot is the fact that while the ball is in hyper good focus, your depth of field is so narrow that the pitchers glove is out of focus. It isn't a huge deal, the images are still very spectacular... just an observation as I pixal peep your images trying to learn.

Jerry,
Good stuff as usual. I prefer the full body shots to, but that is because the card companies I have done stuff for have all wanted them full for editing purposes. BA and other publications usually do cut the pics down a bit and crop them close like you already have on some of these, standard for papers and mags to do that. I just shot 10 games in 8 days and will have some stuff posted here soon, however looking at these I just can't seem to get my colors to pop like you do. Here's two of the ones I did...portrait and action shot... My dad can beat up your dad, he's Roger Clemens. Rog's kid Koby, who is an extremely nice guy and one heck of a 3rd baseman! ![]() Answer to the portrait question? Not one cloud in the sky, shot with the sun over his left shoulder but to the side a bit at around 11:45am. 50mm 1.4 f/stop: 2.5 shutter: 1/1000 ISO: 100 Flash: 580EX Speedlight ******************************************* shooting into the sun, looks perfect on my camera, light on my laptop and dark on my desktop. I dont know which one to trust! How to get my colors as good as yours I have NO clue. Eric King gets his first of 3 hits on the day... ![]() f/stop: 3.5 shutter: 1/1250 ISO: 200

Mark - I never know what to submit to the rags -- they always seem to crop whatever I send. If I have good landscape and portrait mode shots of the same guy I usually submit both so they have a choice. The focus point for both images you mentioned were the chest/neck area so I guess I'm probably back focusing a bit but I actually prefer the narrow DoF -- I'll do almost anything I can to minimize background clutter.
Mike - I really do like your portrait results. I've not had a chance to do very many portraits in noon or early afternoon sunlight. I've tried different angles with flash during early evening but the sunlight here is so intense that even two flash units doesn't solve the problem. Then when I got the chance to try portraits in early afternoon sunlight the other day my 10D broke -- it's with Canon for repair now. Koby does seem to be a nice kid -- I saw him in ST. I wonder if he gets tired of all the fan favoritism though -- it's almost as if he's the only guy on the team. I bet I saw a half dozen fans ask him to pose for a pic.

Night games I have to figure out since the sun is lower and can't put it over their shoulder. To the side you still get that line and a bit of a washed out look. Since it's early in the season stadium shadows are there and it's not a problem, long as the background and forground is all in the shade. I'll see what I can do since I shoot portraits every game basically. Koby definately gets some attention, but I'm sure he's used to it since he grew up watching his father and what he goes through. Eli Iorg is on the team as well so Koby isn't the only son of an ex-major leaguer. Few other good prospects on that team as well that get noticed (Josh Flores, Brian Bogisevic). Being in the situation he could have an attitude but the kid really is just an all around good guy. He impressed me last year in Rookie ball with his skill and again this year looked good down at 3rd.
