Default wireless question

okay so i was messing around with my 580EX and a friends 420EX. i had mine set to master and his 420EX on slave in group A chanel 1. i really dont understand, sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldnt. is there a particular range on it. or some certain direction they have to be facing. I couldnt make a pattern about it. sometimes it wouldnt even work three feet from the camera. sometimes it would work from 50.

Your 580 has to be able to get an infrared signal to the other flash. Just like a remote control. Think of that big red "eye" on the front of your 580 as a remote control. Gotta point it at the TV! (the 430)

Basically, the "fronts" have to somewhat be able to see each other.

Inside a normal room these tend to work without much fuss about direction. The walls and ceilings seem to take care of transmitting OK. I have been playing for the first time with this today and have not paid any attention at all to direction or angle and there has not been an issue. I would expect that outside the distance is dramatically reduced and direction is much more critical.
