Default Pricing

I'm currently attending college and my major is Photography. I currently take photos for friends and family and do not charge for my time and some are telling me that my pictures are good and that I should charge by the hour. I'm not sure what the logistics are with that. I would love to charge, but am not sure if I can since I'm not licensed as of yet and don't have a degree. What I would like to know is what are the logistics with charging for time and photos when you aren't licensed and have no degree? Can you charge? If so, how much can you charge for pictures and for your time, etc? Is there a site with all this information on it? I take digital photos as well as photos using film.

Not sure if you need a degree to charge. I mean what does it matter anyways? Let your work speak for itself.

Of course you can charge. Get all the market will bear.

If you are studying photography, it is obvious you may intend to make your living, or at least part of your living via photography, so in addition to you core studies on photography, it seems you need to devote some time to the business aspect of photography.

Understanding and executing the business side of photography is likely to be far more important than your photographic technical skills, if you want to eat as a result of photography (not that the technical aspect is not also important).

Enjoy! Lon

The work is yours. I wouldnt think anybody would need a license or degree in photography to charge for their photos. Its your copyrighted material.

Most photographers charge either a "day rate" or half day rate, or charge by the job for standard jobs like portraits; prints beyond a stipulated number (which may be anywhere from 0 on up) are additional. Photographers aren't licensed in any place I know of, so there are no educational requirements to be met. If you're doing this more than occasionally, however, you may need a business permit and a Tax ID Number to collect (and pass on) sales tax.

Call around your area and see what the other photographers are charging. I bet you'll be surprised. Then since you seem hesitant, charge 60-75% of those prices, I'm sure you'll still make plenty of money.
