Hey, Shouldnt I spend the extra money and get a warrenty when I buy a Rebel XT? I'm probably buying one from BH Photo or ebay if I find a nice one.
But I saw on BH Photo http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...goryNavigation Should I buy that warrenty when I buy the camera? Thats like the only one I saw on BH Photo that would cover the XT.

Personally I wouldn't. Actually you may want to look into putting insurance on your kit though, generally it is much better than a warranty.

Personally I would. I would also put a rider on my insurance policy. My entire kit cost $13 to add a rider.

insurance and warranties. I can't afford to replace what I already bought. therefore I want to cover myself if something happens...

I've heard too many bad things from people who actually tried to use the Mack warrenty so I skipped it when I upgraded to my XT.

i got the extended 3 year warrenty on my 20D (about $250CAD) cause i know i likely wont need a better camera anytime soon, and if i do, this would just become my secondary, and for 3 years coverage where if i take it in more then, i think 3 times to henry's - i just get a brand new camera or equvilent at that time

If you purchase your camera / lens with an American Express or Visa, the credit card company typically offers to double the manufacturers warrantee from 1yr to 2yrs. After calling Visa to verify the feature on my card, I used it to purchase a 350D body. All I had to do was register the purchase with Visa by sending in copies of the receipt and bar code.
I have not had to use this warrantee extension but I would much rather be dealing with my credit card company than some 3rd party warrantee company. I also asked how the repair would be executed if it was on Visa’s nickel. The Visa rep stated that I would check in with them and send the camera to a Canon authorized repair site. They would simply pay for the repair. It sure seems like something for nothing and I would like to hear from anyone who has actually had repair work done after the Canon warrantee was up. |

I figured it was a good idea to get the 7 year international warranty as I do not live in the USA - thankfully I have not had to put it to the test!

Call me stingy...OK don't...But.
With all the money I have saved over the ....Decades... by NOT buying extended warrantees on anything from Cookers to Cars, if I get burned once.... then I'm still miles ahead. You pays your money and you takes your chances.... but usually it goes wrong quickly, and is covered under standard warrantees, or goes on until its plain old worn out or redundant. Insurance companies write the policies, because the odds are in their favour that they will not have to pay out, or will have your premium invested long enough to not feel too much pain. Thats how THEY make a profit. PS, I work for an insurance company...but I ain't saying which one..

Extended warranties in the UK have a bad rep among the financially savvy at any rate. there is often huge pressure on consumers to buy them, sales people get pretty hefty commissions on them, often relying on this to top up slave-wage salaries..
I'd rather keep my money, 'self-insure' and rely on the warranty. the credit card extended warranties are a good deal, they are something for nothing as they say, but bear in mind the credit card will use the info to try and sell you - guess what - an extension on the extended warranty! But it's horses for courses, ultimately insurance is about peace of mind. i just worry that in this pastime there is so much to spend money on, I'd rather not throw it away. I do have my gear insured against theft, loss or damge in and out the house, as an extension on my household insurance. that's common sense - but an extended warranty - no!! Canon UK want £176 to extend my original 1 year warranty by another 2 years. that is a LOT of money for a 20D that is going to get at most medium level action from me over the next few years.

FWIW, I did a search on the net to see if I could find complaints about the Mack warranty. The only bad thing I saw is that they only fix things that fail 'unnaturally'. Anything that breaks as a result of mishandling isn't covered. Mack is the one who decides if the camera was abused or not. But despite this one shortfall, there aren't many negative comments about Mack warranties on the net. |

Extended warranties are generally not considered a good investment. You've got a year on the gear. I'd not buy one.

It comes with a warranty already. These extended warranties are just a way for the retailer to boost profits. IMHO they are a waste.
