Red face How Do I turn the flash off (Canon 20d) in AUTO mode? P mode?M mode?

I would read the manual, but I am out of state and forgot it. New to Canon 20d.

In auto (green box) mode, you can't turn it off. It will pop up if the camera deems it necessary.

In P mode, M, Av, Tv and A-DEP, it won't fire unless you push the button to make it pop up. If you don't want it to fire, push it back down.

In the Basic zones it'll pop up whenever it thinks you should use it. In P, M, or any of the other Creative zones, just push it down, or don't pop it up as appropriate - it won't fire unless you actually deploy it.

I would check the manual. Read it cover to cover. The full auto pops the flash automatically. The flash in other modes must be manually popped up. Better yet, consider an external flash. Better light, bounces, etc.

At the very end of the mode dial on the XT is a boxed flash symbol with a slash through it. That is for fully automatic operation where you do not want flash.

Hope this info is in time. Canon also has the manuals on-line. You can find them in the individual camera's download libraries. The 350D/RebelXT manual is at http://beta00.c-wss.com/inc/servlet/...T350DIM-EN.pdf

[Edit] Doh! I gave the XT info and URL, but the 20D is similar and that manual is also available from the EOS Support Download Library.

The simple solution is P mode. It allows some adjusting of in-camera parameters, even shutter and f-stop, and the flash won't pop up unless you do it. The camera is still in full auto mode but with settings like ISO, raw, etc still enabled. Those settings go away when you go to the auto modes like the green box.

You can look at, or download if you wish, the manuals online. Just google canon 20D manual.
