Default Green Horn Prime Lens

Hey everyone,

First time poster. I'm thinking of getting a used Canon 10D (I'm aspiring to be an amatuer photographer). I'm wondering what would be a good prime lens with the crop factor. I'm thinking of the Canon EF 35mm f/2 USM because it's a good fixed lens and would be about normal for 10D. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Joash

Depending on what you like to shoot the 35 f/2 is a good lens and gives a reaonably good angle of view on a 1.6 crop factor body... Other lenses to look at would be the 50mm f/1.4 if you are shooting in low light or the 20mm f/2.8 if you need a slightly wider lens...

I don't have one, but I believe the Sigma 30/1.4 gets good reviews.

Other alternatives could be the 28/1.8 (very nice!) or the Sigma 50/2.8 macro (also very nice )

Joash,

welcome to the forum

The Canon 35/2 is certainly a very good lens at a good price.
There is also the 50/1.8 that is also a very good lens at a great price (75$ only) because of large production batches and simplifications in production (e.g. plastic lens mount).

I guess any of those would make a great beginners' lens, with the more expensive 35/2 being the more versatile focal length, and the 50/1.8 being a very nice focal length for portraits. If you decide to upgrade any of those lenses later, you most likely won't lose much money on it.

Of course, a zoom lens might be more versatile, but won't give the same image quality (unless it is a very expensive zoom lens ).

Best regards,
Andy

Thanks everyone for you advice,

Once I get a little more experience with my first lens, I plan on getting the 50mm f/1.4. It seems you can get this from ebay for around $200-$300. A steal for that fast of a lens with the MTF ratings it's getting I feel.

If I may pick all of your brains one more time. What is the consensus on the best landscape lens, and then best Macro lens. I'm sure it's not as easy as that, but I need to learn somehow right?

Thanks again,

Joash

One thing you'll quickly learn here is there is never a consensus on ANYTHING

Ha ha... I should've known that. Any help would be welcome. It appears that the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro is getting very good reviews on this forum for Macro shots. Anyone have an MTF chart on this lens?

Thanks

Joash

The canon 100m macro is well liked by many. The sigma 150 macro also gets good reviews.

Unfortunately for landscape the crop factor hurts you. The 17-40L is a good lens but is only 27mm on the short end with the crop. That may be wide enough for you. Because you have/getting the 10d you cant use EF-S lenses. The Sigma 10-20 is an good lens that works on the 10d. Which would give you 16-32mm range.

I have the 50 1.8 and find it too long for general use but great for portrait work. I would prefer a 30mm (Sigma 30 1.4 is on my wishlist) for general use.

Enjoy, I have about 3 lenses I want before a Macro but I will get one eventually.

BTW, the lenses on my list are 10-22 Canon, 30 1.4 Sigma, and upgrade to 70-200 IS then the Macro.

I think that's a very good choice.
