compuinfo,
You can do this, but as far as I know you must have a card reader for it to work. Here's how I do it: I download all images to my camera with Chris Breeze's free Downloader and a Zio! cardreader. This brings in not only the original image, but also the .thm thumbnail, to your hard drive. To copy the files back from your computer to the camera, put the card in the cardreader. You need to re-create the directory structure that canon uses to keep track of files on the card. I think all Canon's cameras use the same system, but on my G1 amd D30 the root folder is called DCIM, with subfolders within it that contain 10 photos each. The DCIM root folder will be on the card already if you have images on the card and haven't formatted it. Otherwise do a folder...new operation and create it. To create the subfolders within DCIM look at the number of the image file(s) you want to put on the card. For example, to put image CRW_0572.CRW back onto your card, you would create subfolder 105CANON (so now you have DCIM105CANON) and copy CRW_0572.CRW and CRW_0572.THM into that subdirectory. For image CRW1572.CRW, you would create a subdirectory 205CANON under DCIM, copy the .CRW and .THM file, and so on. I don't use .JPG, but I'm assuming it works the same. Once you have a card reader you can look at the directory structure on the card and figure out how to number the folders and subfolders. If you just copy the files to the card without putting them into the correct subfolder, your camera will not be able to display them (I know, I just tried it!). Good luck, and give a shout if you need more help. Mark |

I've done this a couple ways with my G1. I found the file naming thing to be a pain and then the G1 didn't like many of the JPEG files I produced from other sources.
What works best for me is to use the picture download tool that Canon provides. It also contains an Upload button. Click that button and it'll ask you to specify the files you want to upload. Then it brings you to a dialog box that I don't fully understand. You have to specify Small, Medium, or Large, and whether to adjust the height or width. You need to play around with these to get the results you want. You may not get an image that fits the full display, but you'll get something close. But the nice thing is that it puts the images in a JPEG format that the G1 likes. I used this to upload a slideshow onto my G1 composed of both G1 images and scanned images from slides from Costa Rica. Then I used the TV-out wire to play it on friend's TVs. It worked pretty well. The tools could be better but you can do it. As a plug, check out my Costa Rica photos (G1 and 35mm images): http://boonedocks.net/pa/pa.php3?mode=album&albumid=15 |
