70-200 is too short for most UK tracks. I use mine for the occasional pan shot (cough) or in winter for rallies where i can get nice & close
If you're on budget, look at the Sigma 100-300F4. If you've got money to burn, then look at the Canon 100-400L or the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and think about pairing it with a 1.4x Convertor. If you've won the lottery, then the Canon 300L f2.8 IS and both Canon convertors is your friend

I currently have the 75-300 IS USM and am wondering if I made a hasty choice as I feel I just can't get close enough to the action.
I have bought a Jessops 2x converter but wonder if I have wated my money as its hard to focus on full zom=om and the pictures are a tad soft. (If I am quick tho I can take it back for a refund) I hear the 100-400 is good but a bit slow and I hear the 70-200 f2.8 is supposed to be excellent but and concerned about using converters after the results with the Jessops one. What I need is someone with some lenses I can try |

If you can make it on the Saturday you're welcome to try my 100-400L and the 120-300 Sigma. I won't be there on the Sunday though, as i'll be down at Brands for the WTCC.

Worth knowing the 100-400 is the same speed as your 75-300 IS but has better image quality and also quicker autofocus. Plus there is the extra 100mm
Also worth knowing that the jessops 2x convertor is not very good. Don't be tempted to judge convertors as a whole by the quality from that one.

The other option would be to get another lens to use with your TC....

Since you asked for a Canon lens, I'd have to say the 100-400L. It's my workhorse. It lets me shoot from various distances/positions and can be handheld w/ or w/o IS. It's not the fastest lens around, but I find that motorsports is more about the right shutter speed than it is about right aperture. A Sigma alternative (and a step up in speed) from that would be the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 with a 1.4x and 2x in tow.

Sigma 70-200f2.8 EX DG and a 120-300f2.8 EX Sometimes I use a 1.4x teleconverter on either of those, depends whether I want to go handheld or not. 70-200 is easily hand holdable...120-300 takes a bit of effort!

I used my Sigma 70-200 + 1.4TC at the NZ leg of the V8 supercars recently and was very impressed with the performance of the lens considering I am a complete noob at shooting motorsport. But then again, what do I know.....

I started shotting with a cheap canon lens, 90-300, which was ok. but the pictures are really soft. After trying to find a good replacement I went with the sigma 100-300 F4. I used this year for the first time and loved it. check out this link. Some of the photos I used had used a sigma 1.4x attached which I also liked.

I don’t generally use a Canon lens for motorsport. I usually use a pair of Sigmas; the Sigma EF 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM prime and the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX HSM zoom.
Very rarely I’ll get the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM out, but I only use that when it’s a bright sunny day and it is inconvenient to carry the good lenses around. The 70-200mm f/4L sometimes gets used for *cough* pans *cough*. |
