Wind power has been used for centuries to grind grain, pump water, operate machinery, and more recently to produce electricity.
There are many variations of windmills around the world, and most of us have seen them in various forms.

This thread is a call to post your favorite windmill photos to share. They don't have to be great shots, just shots with windmills in them.

I will start this one with a photo of a pair of modern power generating windmills that are part of a wind farm in Rio Vista, CA, USA.

Here's mine.

It is an old, abandoned windmill in the country near where I live. It may no longer be in use, but it still has a lot of character.

QUOTED IMAGE

I like the beat out old windmill. And the contrails playing tic-tac-toe in the sky, too!

Wow, Nice one, BigOsmo. You don't see a lot of wooden structure windmills left standing.

This is Outwood Windmill, and is the oldest working windmill in Britain. It is open to the public on Sundays and is well worth a visit.

Nice posts, all. Here's my two bits -- shot about four years ago and scanned from a print. These windmills are located near Warsaw, New York (western NY), and are part of an experimental program to see if they are viable. With the current energy situation, I think that we will be seeing more of them. I also love the soothing sound that they make.:)
