Default Bought my wife an A530

Even though she has every opportunity to use the S2, she wanted a small camera that she can keep with her. The A530 arrived today and I did a very brief tryout of it. My only concern is that the zoom is quite loud. My S2 is virtually silent as it zooms in and out but there is a lot of motor noise with the 530. Is this normal for this camera? Being that it is among Canon's cheapest cameras, I am not expecting greatness. But I just need to make sure the noise is normal.

Not familiar with that model, however I don't think it has USM (ultra sonic motor=quiet)

If this is the case I would not be too concerned about it---though maybe someone with that model can help you out more.

Yup - it's normal as long as it's not grinding or grating. You'll definitely be able to hear it unlike Canon's awesome ultrasonic motors (USM). As far as I am aware, the S2 is the only one of their smaller cameras that has USM and that is part of the reason I think quite highly of it.

You can definitely hear the aperture opening and closing too, it makes quite a lot of clicking. Surprised me at first... like you I am used to Canon's higher-end gear.

Congratulations on your new A530.. enjoy it!

Ok - thanks. I figured for a cheaper camera that may be normal. Guess I am just spoiled.

Is that just with slow zoom? My S2 is quite loud with fast zoom.

mine isn't loud, yeah it can be heard but that is usually because my face is up against the camera--compared to other compact camera's--i think the s2 is very quite

I love the noises my A80 makes, clicks and whiirs, the occasional fart.
Lets me know something mechanical is happening.
