Default white lighting not sync'd, sheesh

Sheesh where do I start? I borrowed a white lighting ultra 600 from a friend. I set it to use built in flash trigger and 1/2 f. When I take a picture I can see the flash from my camera. But if I cover my camera flash with my hand (allowing it to trigger the White Lighting) it turns out nearly black. Only the model light is showing in the picture.

I have a canon 350D set to manual 125 f5.6 which I metered. So this is a sync problem. I have ensured its on 1st curtain. But no avail. So I set it to 1/4 sec and 2nd curtain. This actually flashes the camera twice,(i'm not sure about the flash) once at the start of the shot and once at the end. Somehow this works. But if it is set under 1/5 sec it does not work.

Should I set 1st or 2nd sync? Is there a problem with what I'm doing? I can't figure it out and I don't have a wired or wireless sync. My friend uses a Nikon D100. But I don't think its a Canon vs Nikon problem. I think I haven't set something properly.

David, the problem is that you are using a flash source (the built-in flash) that is coupled with the camera for automatic flash exposure. The flash unit emits a "pre-flash" for the camera to calculate the required flash exposure, and then emits the main flash. The studio flash is triggering on the pre-flash. By the time the built-in flash fires the second time, the studio flash has gone off and is in the process of recycling.

There is absolutely no way that you can blend in a studio flash in the way that you are trying to do it (triggered by the built-in flash). The reason is fairly simple. The built-in flash is exposure control is purely automatic. There is no manual exposure mode for the built-in flash. Assume for the moment that you put a separate "second-flash" sensor (often called a "digital" slave) on the studio flash that made it ignore the pre-flash and go off at the correct time for the exposure. In this scenario, the camera and built-in flash calculates the correct exposure for the built-in flash, and then the studio flash - which the camera had no knowledge of - goes off and blows out the exposure. Overexposure is almost assured.

You would be far better off to get a hotshoe-to-PC adapter and use a cable to trigger the studio flash unit. Ignore the built-in flash for this purpose. A handheld flash meter would be an extremely useful tool.

SkipD is right on as usual. prefalsh is your enemy in the studio unless you have some kind of fancy doo-hickeys that ignore the preflash. use a hotshoe to PC cord adaptor and a PC cord. works everytime.

So even turning off the Emits doesn't help. I'm so screwed. Have to get a sync cord and hot shoe sync tomorrow. Sheesh.

I also turned of red eye. Time to read the manual to see if I can turn off the pre-flash.

I found a work around. By pressing the * with the flash up, it will pre-flash. If I hold it, it will not preflash anymore. This is a least a work around if I cannot get the sync cord and pc sync adapter for the camera. I think Nikon allows turning off pre-flash. So should Canon.

Ok the final work around.

1. set camera to manual. Meter......125 5.6
2. set fec to -2 (so it does not show up in photo)
3. enable flash
4. press * to preflash
5. Press shutter (as soon as I let go of *, then I have to do it again)

David - check the trigger voltage of your studio flash. Under 6v (Canon doesn't really say what the hotshoe will handle?) you can just buy a cheap hotshoe-to-PC adapter and a PC cord to trip your studio lights. It's cheap and easy.
